Sources: NHL to talk Sochi

NEW YORK -- The NHL's continued involvement in the Olympic Games will be discussed later this week when the league meets with the IOC, the International Ice Hockey Federation and the NHL Players' Association.

The meetings are scheduled for Thursday and Friday in New York City, sources with both the NHL and NHLPA confirmed.

The NHL has sent its top players to the Olympics ever since the 1998 Games in Nagano but has not yet signed off on Sochi 2014.

The league and the NHLPA are in agreement in issues it wants resolved with the IOC and IIHF, among them a better ability to showcase the Games on their own media platforms such as NHL.com and NHLPA.com.

It's also expected the NHL, NHLPA and IIHF will discuss the possible return of the World Cup of Hockey, which features the NHL's best players but hasn't been held since September 2004.
