Ranomi Kromowidjojo wins 100 free

LONDON -- Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands won the 100-meter freestyle at the London Olympics on Thursday.

Kromowidjojo clocked 53.00 to improve on her own Olympic record set in Wednesday's semifinals.

Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus touched in 53.38 to take the silver medal, and Tang Yi of China finished in 53.44 for bronze in swimming's signature event.

American teenager Missy Franklin got off to a terrible start -- she was last at the turn -- and couldn't rally. She finished fifth, two-tenths off the podium. The other U.S. swimmer, Jessica Hardy, finished last in the eight-woman field.

"I'm really unsatisfied about the time, but a gold medal is a gold medal," Kromowidjojo said. "I'm really happy with the gold medal."
