MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. -- Top-seeded Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik won their first two matches in straight sets at the Manhattan Beach Open on Friday.
They defeated No. 17 Abra Amwake and Kaui Salzman 21-17, 21-8 before returning to the sand to put away No. 32 Andrea Sanchez and Nora Tobin 21-5, 21-6 on the first day of the pro beach volleyball event.
Eighth-seeded Megan Wallin and Chara Harris also won their first two matches after arriving from the East Coast less than 24 hours earlier to escape Hurricane Irene.
"It's a great feeling to win after dealing with the anxiety of getting no sleep and wondering if we were going to make it out of Florida," Harris said.
Also advancing were veterans Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan.
In the men's bracket, Kevin Wong and Jesse Rambis, the 25-year-old son of former Los Angeles Lakers star Kurt Rambis, defeated Niels Nielson and Travis Schoonover 21-19, 19-21, 15-8 playing their first tournament together.
