Harland Sutherland of Soddy Daisy, Tenn., weighed in an 8.94-pound in the 8-9 a.m. hour Sunday morning to win the McDonald's Big Bass Splash on Lake Guntersville.
Besides his hourly victory worth $1,000, Sutherland also won a Triton 18 Explorer/115 Mercury equipped with a Minn Kota trolling motor and Lowrance electronics valued at $25,250.
Scott Keeling of Guntersville, Ala., might have had him worried when he brought in his lunker in the noon-1 p.m. hour, but the 8.27-pounder was only good for second place and $2,500 cash.
In third place was Jeremy Pond of Moody, Ala, who weighed in an 8.08-pound bass in the 6-7 a.m. hour to take the lead. He passed Arnie Coons of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., whose 7.59-pounder led on Saturday. Coons ended up fourth while James Hastings of Scottsboro, Ala., was fifth with a 7.41-pound lunker caught sunday.
The anglers were vying to win a share of more than $100,000 in guaranteed cash and prizes. Five places were paid every hour to the five heaviest single bass weighed in that hour.
