Jimmie Johnson has switched to his backup car for the weekend after wrecking his primary in Turn 3 in the first practice. "I had a good first lap and entering Turn 3 for my second lap just got in there with a lot of speed anticipated it sticking," he said. "[It] didn't quite stick and then once I got out of the PJ1 (a track surface adhesive) there was just really no slowing down or directing it off the wall at that point. Came around and it got the fence. Definitely not the way we wanted to start. Frustrating, but we will take it and go figure it out"

Chase Elliott was docked 15 points and crew chief Alan Gustafson was suspended for one race for an illegal modification to a component that affected aerodynamics during Elliott's second-place run Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway. Elliott dropped from sixth to eighth in the standings and from having a 33-point cushion on the current elimination cutoff to 18 points with two races left in the opening round. Gustafson also was fined $25,000 and the team also lost one playoff point it had earned for winning a stage at Chicagoland.
