Kyle Larson has finished second in the last three NASCAR Cup races. With a Cup car on the pole for the race Sunday at Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway as well as a win Saturday in the Xfinity Series race, Larson explains why he is much more confident going into the race Sunday than in past Cup races:

Brad Keselowski will start third Sunday at Auto Club Speedway, not a bad spot considering he is without crew chief Paul Wolfe, who has been suspended for three weeks after the team failed rear alignment specifications after the race Sunday at Phoenix. Keselowski, when asked how the team mood is after the penalty, said: "I don't know if I really have a great read for it. Nobody likes the situation. It's one of those things that you can't do anything about so I guess you've got to kind of move on. [The penalty] is a huge deal. But that's the rule. It's our job to abide by the rules."

Joey Logano will have sticker tires to start the race Sunday at Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway as his car never made it through tech in time for him to post a qualifying lap Friday. Because teams start the race on the tires they use in qualifying, that will be an advantage on some cars that have had five or six laps in qualifying. Would that be enough to get him into the top-10 by the end of the first stage at Lap 60? Logano: "Will I catch those guys on the first run? If our car is an animal, yes. Will it drive to the lead without a caution? No. We will have to have some cautions and good restarts and good pit stops. … It's going to affect us in the first stage most likely."

Jimmie Johnson won't participate in qualifying today after wrecking his primary car in practice. He likely will start 39th Sunday at Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway. Crew chief Chad Knaus: "I just felt it was wiser to get the car prepared correctly rather than qualify poorly. I wasn't comfortable putting Jimmie in a position where he would have to hustle a car that he hasn't turned a lap in yet. We are all the way out here on the west coast, and brought two race cars. If we were to crash this car, we would have to pull a car from a teammate and it would be a very difficult obstacle to overcome."

In response to Kurt Busch's counterclaim filed earlier today that requests millions in damages be awarded to him because his former agent Jon Caponigro and his law firm had a conflict of interest representing both Busch and teams Penske Racing and Andretti Autosport, the Caponigro law firm (which is suing Busch for alleged unpaid fees) released a statement Friday: "[These] allegations are outrageous and have no factual basis. It is a shame that, in an effort to avoid paying fees that are owed, Defendants instead have chosen to disparage the impeccable reputation of our clients who, for more than a decade, maximized Mr. Busch's career opportunities, financially and otherwise, often during times when Mr. Busch's conduct, both on and off the track, threatened his career."

Dale Earnhardt Jr. feels NASCAR should take action for driver misbehavior when the caution is out or after the race. Here is his idea for a penalty for Austin Dillon, who was not sanctioned for squeezing Cole Custer into the fence under caution last week at Phoenix:
