Alex Bowman and Nationwide not an obvious fit, but may be good one
Alex Bowman will drive the No. 88 next year and he's going to do it with Nationwide as his primary sponsor, continuing a relationship the company has with the current occupant, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Is Bowman an obvious fit? No, but he may be a good one.

NASCAR has changed the laboratory to conduct drug tests of drivers and crew members. Instead of having Aegis Laboratories administer and diagnose the tests, NASCAR will have Drug Free Sport administer the tests and have then send them to the Sports Medicine and Research Testing Laboratory. A NASCAR spokesman said it wasn't the case of NASCAR being unhappy with Aegis but an opportunity to work with a group exclusively devoted to drug testing in sports.

Greg Ives will be crew chief next year for Alex Bowman, who is replacing Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the Hendrick Motorsports No. 88 car. Bowman will have sponsorship from Nationwide (19 races) and Axalta (15 races).
Hendrick Motorsports named Alex Bowman as the driver of its No. 88 car for 2018, taking over for Dale Earnhardt Jr. after he retires from full-time NASCAR Cup racing. The 24-year-old Bowman shared substitute driving duties with Jeff Gordon when Earnhardt missed 18 races with a concussion last year. Bowman competed in 10 races with a best of sixth at Phoenix Raceway, where he earned the pole and led 194 laps. He has 81 career Cup starts, mostly for underfunded teams.
