By cutting over-the-wall crew members from six to five for 2018, NASCAR could put dozens of pit-crew members out of work from jobs that can pay more than $100,000 annually. Should the crew members have been given a year's notice so they could retrain for other jobs? NASCAR Executive Vice President Steve O'Donnell: "Our intention is obviously not to put anyone out of work. Our intention was to work with the race teams and get this in a position where we all felt we were ready to go. This has been dialogue that's taken place with the race teams for a long time; we discussed it actually last year as well. … We felt the timing was right."
