Joey Logano starts 35th, Jimmie Johnson starts 37th -- neither posted a qualifying time -- and Dale Earnhardt Jr. starts at the rear because of a punctured tire for the NASCAR Cup race today at Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway. Logano drove through the field twice Saturday in the Xfinity race, but he expects it to be much harder Sunday even though both drivers will have the advantage of being on sticker tires while most of the field will be on their tires from qualifying. Logano: "The speed difference is not even close. There are so many more competitive cars. It's going to make it a little harder [today]. We had a spectacular [Xfinity] car, so it makes you look like a hero."

Ryan Newman had not won since 2013 prior to his victory last Sunday at Phoenix. That has meant he has had to try to make the NASCAR playoffs by points. With the win, he doesn't have to sweat points starting today when he rolls off fifth at Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway. Newman: "That's the biggest relief, I would say -- aside from getting the victory after 127 races -- was being locked into a less-stressful [season finale at] Richmond. It seems like we always, no matter what, have been on the bubble, either on the good side or the bad side, the last six or seven years, in trying to fight our way in at Richmond. So not being that guy will be fun."

Kyle Larson has finished second in the last three NASCAR Cup races. With a Cup car on the pole for the race Sunday at Auto Club (Calif.) Speedway as well as a win Saturday in the Xfinity Series race, Larson explains why he is much more confident going into the race Sunday than in past Cup races:

Brad Keselowski will start third Sunday at Auto Club Speedway, not a bad spot considering he is without crew chief Paul Wolfe, who has been suspended for three weeks after the team failed rear alignment specifications after the race Sunday at Phoenix. Keselowski, when asked how the team mood is after the penalty, said: "I don't know if I really have a great read for it. Nobody likes the situation. It's one of those things that you can't do anything about so I guess you've got to kind of move on. [The penalty] is a huge deal. But that's the rule. It's our job to abide by the rules."
