2013 Power Rankings: Dover
Each week of the Sprint Cup season, ESPN The Magazine's Ryan McGee ranks the top 20 drivers in the series.
New this week
Juan Pablo Montoya
Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin jump seven spots each.
Aric Almirola and Greg Biffle fall six spots each.
Tony Stewart, Marcos Ambrose, Jack Ingram, CatCam
1. Matt Kenseth
He had one of the best cars on the track but was undone by an ill-timed caution. Still, he actually made up eight points on the leader and if there's such a thing as a Dover Jedi, then he is one.
2. Jimmie Johnson
Another wreck at Charlotte, but Double J gets extra credit for his All-Star win. He's also pretty good on the Monster Mile as in tied with Richard Petty and Bobby Allison for most career wins.
3. Kevin Harvick
In Victory Lane I joked with Happy about being a terrible lame duck. Standing nearby was John Goodwin from Duck Commander, who corrected me. "Lame Duck Dynasty!"
4. Carl Edwards
Yet another guy who looked like he might win it, but didn't. Still, finishing 11th was enough to let him hang onto second in points. His career average Dover finish of 8.3 is tops among all active drivers.
5. Clint Bowyer
Props for one of the best NASCAR prop usages I've seen. Prior to the green flag, the TV booth asked him how he'd make it through the long race. He held up a bottle of his sponsor for the in-car camera.
6. Kasey Kahne
Finally got a May finish worthy of his fast car.
7. Kyle Busch
If Shrub's head had exploded on Sunday night, I really think that, for once, America would have been behind him. A broken sky cam cable? Really? What's next? A meteor strike?
8. Dale Earnhardt Jr.
I swear, whenever his wrecked machine comes into focus on TV, I think I hear a million remote controls clicking "off" all at once.
9. Martin Truex Jr.
After a wonky start to the season, the Clam Prince of New Jersey is headed back to the spot of his only Cup win just as he's on the upswing. If he wins, steamed seafood for one and all!
10. Brad Keselowski
Whatever bad luck that isn't gobbed all over Kyle Busch is stuck to this guy like a wad of angry barnacles. Paul Wolfe can't get back on top of the war wagon soon enough.
11. Jeff Gordon
He seemed to be flirting with a really bad finish for several weeks. On Sunday night, it finally happened. The last of his four Dover wins came in 2001, but he did finish second there last fall.
12. Denny Hamlin
If you're scoring at home (and he certainly is), Hambone is now 24th in points, 53 points out of 20th, which is eight closer than he was one week ago. He can totally do this. But he'll need help.
13. Ryan Newman
Rocket Man posted back-to-back top-10s for the second time this season, but those crooked numbers in between are bogging him down. He has three Dover wins, but that was a long time ago.
14. Paul Menard
That sigh of relief you heard last week was Menard after signing a new multiyear deal with Richard Childress. That bigger sigh of relief you head was Childress's bank account.
15. Kurt Busch
On Saturday he told me that the 600-mile marathon might finally be the equalizer he needed to overcome pit-stop woes. He was right. But that made settling for third even more painful.
16. Jamie McMurray
His average finish during the month of May was 21.0. Man, didn't it feel like he was running a lot better than that? And how is he still 14th in points?
17. Aric Almirola
The King's apprentice was my sleeper pick for the 600. That didn't work out. He might not be a bad one for Dover. He finished sixth there one year ago. But I won't pick him because that didn't work out.
18. Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.
He's still hanging around, not great, but not terrible either. Before Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart came along, this was what we expected from rookies. Finished 12th last fall in his only Dover Cup start.
19. Greg Biffle
My confidence in this group is waning. What should have been sure things at Darlington and Charlotte ended up with Biff being the punched instead of the puncher. Only one top-10 in his last seven Dover visits.
20. Joey Logano
Yes, I do have an ESPN.com Stock Car Challenge fantasy racing team. I had JoLo on my roster until just a few moments before the green and replaced him with Biffle. Dang it.
