NHRA postpones U.S. Nationals

Steady rain in Indianapolis has forced the NHRA to postpone Monday's U.S. Nationals until next weekend, Sept. 8-9 at Lucas Oil Raceway.

"The persistent weather has affected the racing surface, and we have chosen to make the tough decision to postpone the race until next weekend," said Graham Light, NHRA senior vice president of racing operations. "We are planning to run the remainder of the event next weekend on Saturday and Sunday."

The NHRA also has decided to reopen the final two rounds of qualifying, which were rained out Sunday.

That's a huge break for some of the top drivers, including Funny Car veterans Robert Hight and Cruz Pedregon, who had failed to qualify in the first two rounds.

The Funny Car NHRA Traxxas Nitro Shootout, the NHRA's $100,000 bonus race among eight drivers, will run on Saturday.
