John Force back on top in Funny Car

Before every event of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, ESPN analyst Mike Dunn will rank the top five drivers -- and riders on weekends the Pro Stock Motorcycle crew competes -- in each class. Up this week? The Auto-Plus NHRA New England Nationals at New Dragway in Epping, N.H.

Top Fuel

1. Shawn Langdon
2. Clay Millican
3. Spencer Massey
4. Steve Torrance
5. Tony Schumacher

Even though Langdon stumbled in Bristol, you can't ignore his record this year. The way Millican has run the past three races, I believe he has a car that gives him his best shot at getting his first win. Can't count out Torrance. When Lee Beard finds the sweet spot in the tuneup he is very good at getting the most out of his cars.

Funny Car

1. John Force
2. Courtney Force
3. Matt Hagan
4. Cruz Pedregon
5. Del Worsham

The reason that John is No. 1 in the rankings is not just the way he dominated in Bristol, but because his crew chief, Mike Neff, said in his interview that he put the car back the way he had it when he was driving. That should get the attention of the rest of the class. Courtney is No. 2 because in Bristol she had the second-best car on Saturday and Sunday. Only problem was she raced her dad in the first round and he had the best car.

Pro Stock

1. Mike Edwards
2. Jeg Coughlin
3. Erica Enders-Stevens
4. Allen Johnson
5. Roger Brogdon

After a strong showing in Bristol, Enders-Stevens is third in the standings, but at the time of my deadline it was not known if she will have the funding to run. That would be a shame because she has a good car and is a great driver. Brogdon makes it on because of his Bristol win, even though he did not really have the numbers to be in the rankings. He was at the right place at the right time and was able to take advantage, and that is just as important in getting the win.

Pro Stock Motorcycle

1. Michael Ray
2. Hector Arana Jr.
3. Matt Smith
4. Scotty Pollacheck
5. Hector Arana

The Harleys are missing, because even though I thought they came out looking decent at Gainesville, they have not really improved since. Nobody expects this to continue, and once they find it I am sure they will start reeling off wins with all of the talent on that team.
