Spencer Massey roars to the top

Before every event of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, ESPN analyst Mike Dunn will rank the top five drivers -- and riders on weekends the Pro Stock Motorcycle crew competes -- in each class. Up this week? The NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway in Northern California.

Top Fuel

1. Spencer Massey
2. Doug Kalitta
3. Shawn Langdon
4. Bob Vandergriff
5. Antron Brown

Spencer makes it to the top of the rankings for the first time coming off the win in Denver while holding both ends of the track record in Sonoma. The way Antron is running right now, he should not be in the rankings, but it is hard to ignore the fact that he has won here three of the past four years.

Funny Car

1. Cruz Pedregon
2. Robert Hight
3. Ron Capps
4. Courtney Force
5. Johnny Gray

Coming off his win in Denver, it appears Cruz has his mechanical issues in check. We know he has the tuneup, and with him holding the track elapsed time record in Sonoma, I like his chances. With Mike Neff tuning Robert's car, he makes a strong move back into the rankings.

Pro Stock

1. Allen Johnson
2. Mike Edwards
3. Shane Gray
4. Jeg Coughlin
5. Vincent Nobile

All of the Denver winners are at the top of the rankings because sweeping the Western Swing is still a big deal and I think it gives the teams a little more momentum going into the second race of the swing. That being said, all of them still run well at sea level and Allen is the defending event champion in Sonoma, so I really like his chances, as well as Spencer's and Cruz's.

Pro Stock Motorcycle

1. Hector Arana Jr.
2. Michael Ray
3. Matt Smith
4. Adam Arana
5. Eddie Krawiec

I wanted to put Denver winner Shawn Gann in the rankings, but I went back and looked at his numbers at all of the other races and I don't see that he has the bike to run at sea level yet. To be honest, I hope he proves me wrong and I can put him in the rankings for their next event at Indy.
