Ronn Capps fails to qualify

KENT, Wash. -- NHRA Funny Car veteran Ron Capps, who ranks No. 2 in the season standings, failed to qualify Saturday at the Northwest Nationals.

Capps was the odd man out, the 17th qualifier in the 16-car field, after he spun the tires on his NAPA Dodge at the start of his final qualifying attempt.

It's the first time in 34 races that Capps has failed to qualify, dating back to the Las Vegas event last spring. And it's the first time Capps has failed to qualify since Rahn Tobler took over as the tuner after the Vegas event last season.

"It's part of the sport, especially when you only have two rounds of qualifying," Capps said. "But I still have the best team in the world."

Friday's two qualifying sessions at Pacific Raceways were rained out.

Capps lost the 2012 Funny Car championship by only two points to Jack Beckman, his teammate at Don Schumacher Racing. Capps already has clinched a spot in the 2013 NHRA Countdown, the six-race playoff for the title that begins in September.
