Gardner, McConnell headed to South Bend

The Fighting Irish have two football pledges, while Cincinnati and Oregon captured top cage prospects.

Notre Dame has commitments from defensive/offensive back Isaiah Gardner of Virginia Beach-Salem, Va., over Virginia Tech, Michigan State, Tennessee and Oklahoma, among many others; and running back Ashley McConnell of Adairsville, Ga., who was also being recruited by North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.

Syracuse received a commitment from running back/linebacker Breyone Evans of Bristol-Central, Conn., over Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan State and UConn.

San Diego State added defensive back Donny Baker of Miami-Pace, Fla., as a late signee for this season.

Top News:
Considered the nation's top junior college prospect, center/forward Robert Whaley of Benton Harbor, Mich./Barton County CC, Kan., has committed to Cincinnati. Whaley, who originally signed with Missouri in Class 2001, averaged 19 points and seven rebounds during 2001-02. He may consider the NBA Draft.

Oregon has a pledge from Top 100 guard Aaron Brooks of Seattle-Franklin, Wash., over UCLA and Washington.

Memphis, Mississippi State, California, Louisville, Michigan State, Michigan, Florida, Syracuse, Illinois and Oklahoma lead the Early Top Classes.

Nebraska has commitments from guard Charles Richardson of Maywood-Proviso East, Ill., and forward/guard Gerald Stegall of Stone Mountain-Redan, Ga.

Colorado has pledges from guard Marcus Hall of Houston-Jersey Village, Texas, and forward Keith Smith of Oklahoma City-Putnam, Okla.

The Oregon State Beavers recently signed guard Chris Stephens of Portland-Madison, Ore., and forward Sal Vance of Oakland-Tech, Calif., for this upcoming season.

Drexel has a commitment from forward Matt Stevenson of Towson-Towson Catholic, Md.

Boston University pledged guard Patrick Martin of Springfield-Cathedral, Mass.
