Top running backs select Irish, 'Canes

The Fighting Irish, Miami-Florida, Michigan and North Carolina State have collected major football commitments.

Notre Dame pledged Top 150 running back Travis Thomas of Washington, Pa., over Iowa, Boston College, Purdue, Northwestern and Pittsburgh, among others.

Tyrone Moss, a Top 150 running back from Pompano Beach-Ely, Fla., has committed to Miami-Florida over Virginia Tech, Michigan State, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech and North Carolina State, among many others.

Top 150 quarterback Clayton Richard of Lafayette-McCutcheon, Ind., has committed to Michigan over Colorado, Illinois, Purdue and UCLA. Richard, who passed for 2,920 yards and 27 touchdowns during his senior season, plans to play both college football and professional baseball. The Wolverines recently pledged offensive lineman Pat Sharrow of Monroe, Mich., over Purdue and Michigan State.

North Carolina State has soft commitments from Top 150 running back Darrell Blackman and Super Prospect defensive lineman Ray Brooks, both from Williamsport-Area, Pa; plus Super Prospect defensive back LeRue Rumph of Clearwater-Central Catholic, Fla., over Florida, Georgia, South Florida and Southern California. The Wolfpack recently pledged linebacker Steve Tulloch of Miami-Killian, Fla., over Pittsburgh and Boston College.

Oklahoma, LSU, Texas A&M, Texas and Georgia head the Early Top Classes. Commitments by conferences.

Big 12:
Iowa State pledged defensive lineman Brent Curvey of Spring-Westfield, Tex., over Houston; and runnning back/defensive back Mike West of Citra-North Marion, Fla., over Louisville, Southern Mississippi, Central Florida and South Florida.

Big East:
Boston College has pledged running back Taji Morris of Hightstown-Peddie, NJ., over Iowa, Minnesota, Rutgers and Lehigh.

Big Ten:
Defensive lineman Trevor Schultz of Battle Creek-Harper Creek, Mich., and defensive lineman/running back Mark Koehn of Newton, Kan., picked Northwestern. The Wildcats recently gained linebacker Nick Roach of Milwaukee-Lutheran, Wis.

Virginia added Super Prospect receiver/defensive back Shannon Lane of Virginia Beach-Salem, Va., over Boston College and Virginia Tech.

Georgia Tech has pledges from defensive lineman Leshawn Newberry of Port Orange-Spruce Creek, Fla; quarterback Reggie Ball of Stone Mountain-Stephenson, Ga., over interest from Auburn, Duke and LSU, among others; and defensive lineman Mansfield Wrotto of Snellville-Brookwood, Ga., over Penn State, Mississippi and Maryland.

Tulane pledged linebacker Craig Morris of Marrero-Higgins, La., over interest from West Virginia, Clemson and UAB.

TCU added quarterback Brian Bonner of Beeville-Jones, Tex.

Fresno State gained commitments from defensive lineman Donyell Booker of Reedley CC, Cal., over interest from Texas A&M, Tennessee, Oregon State and Iowa State; running back/receiver Alvin Marshall of Los Angeles-Locke, Cal/Compton CC, Cal., once linked to Washington and originally signed by Nebraska; linebacker Tyler Clutts of Clovis, Cal; and defensive back/linebacker Marcus Riley of Elk Grove, Cal.

Louisiana Tech gained a commitment from quarterback Zac Champion of Bessemer-Academy, Ala.

Oregon gained commitments from tight end Dan Kause of Anaheim-Servite, Cal; and defensive lineman Victor Filipe of Salt Lake City-Highland, Utah., who signed with BYU as a prep and served on mission.

California pledged running back Kenneth Frank of Cerritos, Cal.
