Coveted DB Steltz selects Tigers

LSU has pledged Top 150 defensive back Craig Steltz of Metairie-Rummel, La., over Colorado, UCLA, Florida State, Michigan, Michigan State and Tulane, among others.

Georgia Tech pledged defensive lineman David Brown of Madison-Bob Jones, Ala., over Alabama, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Georgia, among others. The Yellow Jackets recently gained defensive lineman A.J. Smith of Tampa-Jesuit, Fla; and receiver James Johnson of Winter Garden-West Orange, Fla.

Virginia Tech pledged defensive lineman Mike Mangold of Merritt Island, Fla., over Florida, Miami-Florida, North Carolina State and Tennessee; running back/defensive back Brandon Ore of Chesapeake-Indian River, Va; and offensive/defensive lineman Ryan Shuman of Fork Union MA, Va. The Hokies recently gained their 4th prospect from Hargrave MA for Class 2004 in defensive back Brandon Flowers of Del Ray Beach, Fla.

Big Ten Verbal List
The Iowa Hawkeyes have a pledge from defensive back Charles Godfrey of Baytown-Lee, Tex., over Missouri. Godfrey, the brother of Kansas State quarterback Ell Roberson, was also recruited by Kansas State, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and TCU. The Hawkeyes recently gained defensive back Walner Belleus of Immokalee, Fla/Dodge City CC, Kan., over Illinois, Arizona State and South Florida; and running back Shonn Green of Atco-Winslow Township, NJ., over Clemson, Syracuse, Rutgers, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Defensive lineman Everette Pedescleaux of Robbinsdale-Armstrong, Minn., who had picked Northern Iowa for basketball and did not sign during the early period, has committed to Minnesota for football. He is expected to walk-on for Gopher basketball.

Illinois gained offensive linemen Ryan McDonald of Holland-West Ottawa, Mich; and Tony Sparkman of Plymouth-Wayzata, Minn. Illinois recently gained receiver Alex Stroud of Concord-DeLaSalle, Cal; linebacker Sam Carson of Downers Grove-South, Ill., over Indiana, Michigan State, Louisville and Northwestern; and defensive lineman Jeff Sobol of Herculaneum, Mo.

Receiver Bruce Gordon of Naples, Fla/Dodge City CC, Kan., has committed to Purdue.

Defensive back Joe Walker of Green Bay-Notre Dame, Wis., committed to Wisconsin. Linebacker Jammar Crane of Garland, Tex., decommitted from Wisconsin and is considering Kansas, the Badgers, Colorado State and Oklahoma State.

Texas A&M has commitments from defensive back Danny Gorrer of Port Arthur-Memorial, Tex; and linebacker/defensive lineman Aaron Brown of Los Angeles-University, Cal/Compton CC, Cal. The Aggies recently gained linebacker/running back Kedric Goins of Freeport-Brazosport, Tex., over Northwestern and Iowa State. Dustin Long, a Texas A&M junior quarterback from Port Neches-Groves, Tex., will transfer to Sam Houston State.

The Missouri Tigers added defensive lineman George Lane of Arlington, Tex/College of the Siskiyous, Cal., over Iowa State, California, Baylor, Oregon and San Jose State. The Tigers recently gained Top 150 quarterback Chase Patton of Columbia-Rock Bridge, Mo., over Kansas State, Iowa, Tennessee, UCLA and Virginia; defensive back Quincy Butler of San Antonio-Roosevelt, Tex/Tyler CC, Tex., over Tennessee, Texas A&M, TCU, Iowa, Kansas and Syracuse, among others; defensive lineman Stryker Sulak of Rockdale, Tex; and linebacker Arthur Miller of Kirkwood, Mo.

Colorado has a commitment from linebacker Greg Newman of Westlake Village-Westlake, Cal.

Baylor has pledges from linebackers Bradley Bullitt of Garland-Naaman Forest, Tex., over Iowa State, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, SMU and Kansas State; and Geoff Nelson of Cedar Hill, Tex.

Kansas has commitments from defensive back Rodney Harris of San Bernardino Valley CC, Cal; defensive back Aqib Talib of Richardson-Berkner, Tex; linebacker Mozell Axson of Lakeland-Jenkins, Fla; and receiver Dexton Fields of Dallas-South Oak Cliff, Tex.
