Tigers hold early recruiting edge

It's hard to keep those Tigers down, as LSU leads the 2004 Top Recruiting Classes.

Other top programs making an early charge are Texas, Southern California, Miami-Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Penn State, Georgia and Maryland.

LSU, Florida and Southern California topped the Final 2003 Top Classes.

Big Ten Verbal List
Punter/kicker A.J. Trapasso of Pickering-Central, Ohio, picked Ohio State. The Buckeyes recently gained Top 150 tight end Rory Nicol of Beaver-Area, Pa., over Florida, Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech.

Receiver Josh Morgan of Washington, DC-Woodson/Fork Union MA, Va., committed to Iowa over Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and UConn.

Minnesota signed quarterback Adam Ernst of Anaheim-Servite, Cal/California/Mt. San Antonio CC, Cal; and received commitments from both running back Gary Russell of Columbus-Walnut Ridge, Ohio; and linebacker Deon Hightower of Arlington-Mansfield Summit, Tex. The Gophers recently added linebacker Johnny Sampy of Galena Park, Tex; and defensive lineman William Brody of Cleveland-Benedictine, Ohio.

Purdue has defensive lineman/tight end Rob Ninkovich of New Lenox, Ill/Joliet CC, Ill. The Boilermakers recently gained offensive lineman Sean Sester of Ft. Thomas-Highlands, Kty., over Kentucky, Louisville, Miami-Ohio, Michigan State, South Carolina and Indiana; receivers Fabian Martin of Chicago-Prosser, Ill., who decommitted from Illinois; and Bruce Gordon of Naples, Fla/Dodge City CC, Kan.

Wisconsin pledged defensive back Allen Langford of Detroit-Cass Tech, Mich., who decommitted from Indiana. The Badgers recently gained receiver Emmanuel Spann of Atlanta-Westlake, Ga., over interest from Clemson, Duke, Louisville and Marshall.

Northwestern has pledged offensive lineman Alex Rucks of Lincolnshire-Stevenson, Ill.

Indiana has pledged defensive backs Chris Phillips of of Atlanta-Washington, Ga; and Leslie Majors of Harvey-Thornwood, Ill. The Hoosiers recently gained defensive lineman/linebacker Ryan Marando of Lakewood-St. Edward, Ohio.

Quarterback Darrell Jackson of Webster Groves, Mo., and running back/linebacker Alvin Newhouse of Dallas-South Oak Cliff, Tex., chose Missouri. Defensive back Quincy Butler of San Antonio-Roosevelt, Tex/Tyler CC, Tex., decommitted from Missouri for TCU. Missouri recently added defensive lineman George Lane of Arlington, Tex/College of the Siskiyous, Cal.

Colorado pledged receiver Reggie Joseph of Reserve-East St. John, La., over Indiana, Southern Mississippi, Tulane and Louisiana Tech.

Baylor pledged linebacker Ben Hixon of Southlake-Carroll, Tex; and defensive lineman Dan Gay of Lafayette-St. Thomas More, La. The Bears recently gained linebacker/running back Marcus Mead of Alva, Okla. Receiver Curtis Shaw of Beaumont-Ozen, Tex., decommitted from Baylor for Houston.

Miami-Florida has a commitment from offensive lineman Jonathan St. Pierre of Montreal, Quebec.

Boston College has a commitment from defensive lineman B.J. Raji of Washington Township-Westwood, NJ., over Wisconsin and Rutgers. The Eagles recently gained offensive lineman Cliff Ramsey of Loveland, Ohio.

Rutgers has a pledge from offensive tackle Mike Gilmartin of Estero, Fla., who decommitted from South Carolina.

Temple signed four junior college prospects, including running back Tim Brown of Stockton-Franklin, Cal/CC of San Francisco, Cal.

Clemson has offensive lineman Corey Lambert of Greenville, SC., over interest from Florida State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and North Carolina State; and quarterback Tribble Reese of Mountain Brook, Ala., over interest from Notre Dame, Baylor, North Carolina State, Wake Forest and Mississippi State.

Receiver/defensive back Patrick Clark of Jacksonville-Mandarin, Fla., committed to Georgia Tech. Quarterback Taylor Bennett of Ballwin-Lafayette, Mo., decommitted from Georgia Tech for Boise State.

SEC Verbal List
Kentucky has offensive lineman Micah Jones of Mayfield, Kty., over Tennessee, Michigan, Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas and Georgia, among others. The Wildcats recently gained offensive lineman Ernie Pelayo of Chula Vista, Cal/Southwestern CC, Cal; defensive lineman B. Jay Parsons of Irvine-Woodbridge, Cal/Saddleback CC, Cal; and receiver Scott Mitchell of Mt. San Antonio CC, Cal.

Alabama pledged linebacker/defensive lineman Curtis Dawson of Hoover, Ala., over Clemson, LSU, Mississippi and Tennessee, among others.

Vanderbilt has defensive back Jared Fagan of Waldorf-Westlake, Md., over UConn and Virginia Tech.

Louisville pledged receiver/defensive back Marcus Folmar of East Brewton-Neal, Ala.

UAB signed quarterback Chad Wilmott of Butler County CC, Kan; defensive lineman Clarence Respress of Butler Country CC, Kan; and offensive lineman Tommie Keyes of Jones County CC, Miss.

Houston has a pledge from receiver Curtis Shaw of Beaumont-Ozen, Tex., who decommitted from Baylor. The Cougars recently gained linebacker Cody Lubojasky of Sugar Land-Kempner, Tex; and linebacker Rodney Rideaux of Port Arthur-Memorial, Tex.

Northern Illinois has pledged linebacker Larry English of Aurora-Marmion Academy, Ill; and kicker Chris Nendick of Naperville, Ill.

Arkansas State has signed four junior college prospects, including quarterback Devin Hollins of Los Angeles-Crenshaw, Cal/Wisconsin/West Los Angeles CC; linebacker Elias Ellis of El Camino CC, Cal; plus offensive linemen Cody Brown and Lance Martin, both from Columbus-New Hope, Miss/East Mississippi CC, Miss.

Utah State has a commitment from quarterback Cole Nielson of Pocatello-Highland, Idaho. The Aggies recently signed six junior college prospects, including receiver Lawrence Lovelace of Fontana-Miller, Cal/Chaffey CC, Cal.

Arizona State pledged offensive lineman Bradis McGriff of Vallejo, Cal., who decommitted from California.

Linebacker James Alford of Metairie-East Jefferson, La., who signed with West Virginia in Class 2003, but left before the season started, is set for Arizona. He had decommitted from Colorado before picking the Mountaineers.

Mountain West Verbal List
Colorado State pledged receiver Anthony Celestine of Ridgecrest-Burroughs, Cal; and defensive back Bryan Barmer of LaMesa-Helix, Cal.
