Commits rolling in for Alabama

Head coach Mike Shula is quickly rebuilding Alabama in the recruiting process.

Headed for the Tide are defensive lineman Chris Turner of Jacksonville-Ed White, Fla/Northwest Mississippi CC, Miss., who picked Florida State as a prep; plus three teammates from Hoover, Ala., in quarterback John Parker Wilson, defensive lineman Jerami Holifield and linebacker/defensive lineman Curtis Dawson.

Wilson, who will also play baseball at Alabama, passed for 3826 yards and 40 touchdowns as a senior. He also had offers from Clemson, Mississippi, Mississippi State and Tennessee, among others.

LSU leads the 2004 Top Recruiting Classes. Other top programs making an early charge are Texas, Southern California, Miami-Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Penn State, Georgia and Maryland.

Kansas State pledged defensive lineman McCollins Umeh of Houston-Klein Forest, Tex., over Colorado, Florida and Oklahoma State.

In a recruiting saga, receiver Josh Morgan of Washington, DC-Woodson/Fork Union MA, Va., has told callers he was commiting to Maryland, then Iowa, then Virginia Tech within 24 hours. UConn believed the Huskies also had his commitment. The Hokies recently gained defensive back Rod Council of Charlotte-West Charlotte, NC., over Virginia, Michigan and Notre Dame.

Memphis pledged running back Phillip Hyde of Tyrone-Sandy Creek, Ga.

Louisville pledged defensive lineman Anthony Douglas of Eufaula, Ala. The Cardinals recently gained receiver/defensive back Marcus Folmar of East Brewton-Neal, Ala.

Northern Illinois has pledged receiver Matt Simon of Farmington, Minn., and offensive lineman Jon Brost of Maple Grove, Minn. The Huskies recently pledged linebacker Larry English of Aurora-Marmion Academy, Ill; and kicker Chris Nendick of Naperville, Ill.

The UCLA Bruins signed record-setting quarterback David Koral of Malibu-Pacific Palisades, Cal/Vanderbilt/Santa Monica CC, Cal/Florida State/Santa Monica CC, Cal; and linebacker Dan Nelson of Boise, Idaho/Arizona Western CC, Ariz. The Bruins also pledged defensive lineman Chris Johnson and linebacker Fred Holmes, both from River Ridge-John Curtis, La.

Arizona gained defensive back Antoine Cason of Los Alamitos, Cal., over Oregon State. The Wildcats recently added linebacker James Alford of Metairie-East Jefferson, La., who signed with West Virginia in Class 2003, but left before the season started. He had decommitted from Colorado before picking the Mountaineers.
