Freedom routed without injured star Hamm
WASHINGTON -- Tiffeny Milbrett scored two breakaway goals,
and Linda Ormen contributed two assists and a goal to lead the New
York Power to a 4-1 victory over the Washington Freedom on
Milbrett, the top scorer and league MVP last season, helped the
Power (1-0-0) overcome an early deficit by converting two long
passes from Ormen into easy goals.
Ormen, in her first season with the Power, scored in the 63rd
The Freedom played without star forward Mia Hamm, still
sidelined after knee surgery in February and not expected to return
until early May.
Washington struck first when Monica Gerardo sent a hooking
left-foot shot from just inside the box past diving Power
goaltender Saskia Webber in the ninth minute.
After being stifled in the early going, Milbrett broke through
the Freedom defense and tied it 1-1 in the 33rd minute.
Ormen found Milbrett one-on-one with Freedom defender Carrie
Moore on the left side. Milbrett sped past Moore and easily slipped
the ball beyond the reach of goalkeeper Dawn Greenhouse.
On Milbrett's second goal, Ormen sent a long pass that reached
Milbrett as she was in stride with Freedom defender Jen Grubb.
Milbrett blocked Grubb from the ball before getting past her and
knocking a shot into the upper left corner of the net.
Ormen scored on a cross from Minna Mustonen to extend the Power
lead to 3-1. Midfielder Anita Rapp added the last New York goal in
the 84th minute.
