Real Madrid beats MLS All Stars on penalties after 1-1 draw

Real Madrid needed a penalty shootout to beat Major League Soccer's All-Star team after goals from Dom Dwyer and Borja Mayoral saw the teams end 1-1 after 90 minutes at Chicago's Soldier Field.

The match started at a trot on a rainy night in Chicago, with the first legitimate chance coming at the 20-minute mark when Marco Asensio broke into the All Stars' penalty area and forced a close-range save from Tim Howard.

Toni Kroos tried his luck two minutes later from 20 yards, but his shot was blocked by Johan Kappelhof, with shouts for handball coming from the Real Madrid bench.

Mayoral fired wide from 20 yards in the 28th minute, before Kroos' curling effort after a cheeky flip from Lucas Vazquez missed in the same spot.

The All Stars' best chance was neatly saved by Keylor Navas when Kaka set up David Villa at the top of the six-yard box.

With half-time approaching, Isco played a perfect ball into Sergio Ramos with the outside of his right foot, but the Spain international's chipped effort landing squarely on the roof of Howard's net.

And in the final play of the first half, Toronto FC talisman Sebastian Giovinco hit a swerving shot from 40 yards that missed just wide with Navas well off his line and beaten.

Wholesale changes came at half-time, but it was more of the same on the field with Real Madrid having the better of the ball and the chances.

Mayoral finally opened the scoring for Los Blancos in the 59th minute after being picked out by new arrival Dani Ceballos and curling home past substitute keeper Stefan Frei with a deflection coming of MLS defender Matt Hedges.

Karim Benzema was somehow kept from scoring seven minutes later, getting free in the All Stars' penalty area and having Frei beaten before seeing a shot stuffed from very close range.

Chicago Fire striker Nemanja Nikolic was played in nicely in the 70th minute by fellow sub Dwyer, but his well-struck shot slammed into the side netting to keep Madrid in front 1-0.

And the All-Stars would find an equalizer in the 87th minute when Dwyer headed home after Dax McCarty's attempt from a corner a kick smashed off the post and rebounded to the newly minted Orlando City striker.

Early misses from Dwyer and Giovani dos Santos gave Madrid an upper hand in the shootout, with Benzema and Gareth Bale hitting early spot kicks to put the spot-kick test out of reach for the All Stars, with Marcelo finishing things off from 12 yards away to give Real the win.

Atlanta United's Greg Garza left the match after two minutes when he fell awkwardly and separated his shoulder.
