BOSTON -- Mike Oliver won a unanimous decision over Cruz
Carvajal in an International Boxing Federation junior featherweight
title eliminator Wednesday night.
Don O'Neil scored the fight 118-111, Bob McCoy and Ray Delicio
had it 118-110 for Oliver (20-0), of Hartford, Conn.
Carvajal, of Veracruz, Mexico, fell to 28-14-2.
Oliver landed more punches in the first six rounds, though
Carvajal hit him often enough to cause swelling around Oliver's
right eye. There were no knockdowns.
"I saw him on tape and he looked slow," Oliver said. "I hit
him with everything I wanted to hit him with. I was in shape so my
eye didn't affect me."
Both fighters weighed in at 122 pounds. Oliver entered ranked
eighth by the IBF, while Carvajal was ninth. Steve Molitor of
Canada is the IBF champion.
Oliver holds the U.S. Boxing Association junior featherweight
title, which was not at stake in the bout.
