SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, PA. -- Little League International announced today that the State Department will issue visas to the members of the team from Lugazi, Uganda, that qualified for the 2012 Little League World Series by winning the Middle East and Africa Region.
Another team from Kampala, Uganda, had qualified to become the first African participant in the World Series last year, but the State Department declined visas because of irregular and insufficient birth documentation.
"The recommendations given to us by our State Department officials were very helpful in avoiding last year's problems," said Patrick Wilson of Little League International. "We are pleased that next month we will welcome our first team from Africa, and we hope this events spurs even more interest worldwide."
The Uganda players are expected to arrive in the U.S. on the weekend of Aug. 11-12 to prepare for their opening game against Panama on Aug. 17.
