Reviewing Brazil, Australia victories

July, 3, 2011

Brazil, boosted by a pair of goals from Marta, booked its place in the quarterfinals with a 3-0 win Sunday over Norway in Group D. Brazil's win eliminated Equatorial Guinea, which lost 3-2 to Australia in the other Group D match. Marta scored in the 22nd and 48th minutes for Brazil and has 12 goals in Women's World Cup play, tied for second all-time with Michelle Akers of the United States. Australia, which completed a tournament-high 80.7 percent of its passes against Equatorial Guinea, put itself in position to advance with a win or a draw Wednesday against Norway, which needs to win to advance in the tournament.

•  Marta, who sandwiched a pair of goals around an assist, finished her busy match with 76 touches. She completed 28 of 35 passes (80 percent), took three shots (two on goal) and created three scoring chances for teammates, which included Rosana's second goal of the tournament in the 46th minute.

•  Brazil improved in one important area from its opening win against Australia: It made the most of its scoring chances against Norway. Brazil converted three of its six on-target shots into goals against Norway, as opposed to the Australia win where only one of its four on-goal efforts hit the back of the net.

•  This 2011 Brazil squad is the second team to score two goals in the first three minutes of the second half of a Women's World Cup game, joining (ironically) Brazil, which did it in 2007 as part of its 4-0 win over China.

•  Australia's Lisa De Vanna, who scored the eventual match-winning goal in the 51st minute, has recorded four career Women's World Cup goals as a substitute. No other player in Women's World Cup history has scored more than two as a substitute.

•  Añonma scored twice, once in each half, for Equatorial Guinea to give the country its first Women's World Cup goals and its best player a reward for her shooting efforts. Añonma has a tournament-high 22 shots, including seven on goal, through two matches.
