Mohammed Bin Hammam to miss event
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Mohammed Bin Hammam will miss the CONCACAF congress in Miami on Tuesday, passing up a chance to drum up support in his bid to unseat FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
Bin Hammam says on his blog that he had wanted to attend the meeting but can't "due to issues beyond my control."
CONCACAF is soccer's regional governing body for North and Central America and the Caribbean and is considered key to winning the presidential election.
The 61-year-old president of the Asian Football Confederation still hopes to meet CONCACAF members to explain his campaign platform, which includes a wider distribution of World Cup profits and the addition of more seats on the FIFA executive committee.
Bin Hammam is the only candidate facing Blatter in the June 1 vote.
