MELBOURNE, Australia -- Attendance at this year's Australian Open set a
tournament crowd record after 605,735 people filed into Melbourne
Park during the 14-day event.
The 2008 figure surpassed the overall attendance of 554,858 set
during the 2007 Open. It is the ninth consecutive year that the
tournament has attracted total crowds exceeding half a million.
Organizers claimed a Grand Slam record on the fourth day after a
combined 62,885 fans attended the day and night sessions, eclipsing
the previous record of 61,083 at the U.S. Open on Sept. 1, 2007.
