Belarus will play U.S.-Sweden winner

MINSK, Belarus -- Max Mirnyi and Vladimir Voltchkov beat
Agustin Calleri and Lucas Arnold 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 Saturday to give
Belarus a 3-0 lead over Argentina, clinching a berth in the Davis
Cup semifinals.

Voltchkov and Mirnyi also won singles matches in straight sets
Friday in the best-of-five quarterfinal.

Argentina went into the tie without the injured Guillermo
Coria and David Nalbandian and had to pay the price.

Belarus, which upset 2002 champion Russia in the first round,
will face the United States or Sweden in September's semifinals.

France up 2-1 on Switzerland
LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Nicolas Escude and Michael Llodra
came back from a set down to beat Roger Federer and Yves Allegro in
doubles Saturday, putting France ahead of Switzerland 2-1 in a
Davis Cup quarterfinal.

The French won 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 and need to win just
one of Sunday's two singles matches to clinch the best-of-five
series. The winner will face Spain or the Netherlands in the
semifinals in September.

Federer, ranked No. 1 and the reigning Wimbledon and Australian
Open champion, will try to keep Switzerland in it by beating Arnaud
Clement in Sunday's opener.

Escude is slated to face Ivo Heuberger in the final match.

France has won the Davis Cup nine times; Switzerland never has.

Spain-Netherlands match suspended
PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain -- Spain's Tommy Robredo and Rafael
Nadal led the Dutch duo of Martin Verkerk and John van Lottum 2-1
in sets Saturday when their Davis Cup quarterfinal doubles match
was suspended by rain.

If Spain wins the match when it resumes Sunday morning, the
country will clinch a berth in September's semifinals against
France or Switzerland. France leads that quarterfinal 2-1.

Spain, the 2000 Davis Cup champion, took a 2-0 lead over
Netherlands in their best-of-five series by winning both of
Friday's singles matches.

In the doubles, Robredo and the 17-year-old Nadal were ahead
6-3, 6-2, 3-6 when play was stopped. After a three-hour delay, the
rain tapered off, but it was too dark to resume play.

The quarterfinal is being played on an outdoor, red clay court
at a converted bull ring on this Mediterranean island, where rain
is common this time of year. There is no roof or lights or a backup
indoor court.
