Top seed falls in first-round at Vienna

VIENNA, Austria -- Top-seeded Chanda Rubin lost in the first
round of the Vienna Grand Prix on Wednesday, beaten in her return
to the WTA Tour by Russian qualifier Alina Jidkova 6-7 (2), 7-6
(3), 4-6.

This was the American's first match since injuring her left knee
at the Pan Pacific Open in February in Tokyo. Jidkova, ranked No.
84, was playing her fifth match of the tournament.

Second-seeded Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi of Israel downed Klara
Koukalova of the Czech Republic 6-0, 6-1. Fourth-seeded Maria
Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela had far more trouble, losing to Marlene
Weingaertner of Germany 6-1, 6-1.

In another second-round match, fifth-seeded Amy Frazier ousted
Australia's Nicole Pratt 6-1, 6-2. The American will next play
Slovakia's Lubomira Kurhajcova, a 6-4, 6-1 winner against China's
Zheng Jie.

Seventh-seeded Magui Serna of Spain topped Yvonne Meusburger of
Austria 6-1, 6-2. Eighth-seeded Jelena Kostanic of Croatia downed
Li Ting of China 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
