Sanchez Vicario named Spain's Davis Cup captain

MADRID -- Spain has named former player
Emilio Sanchez Vicario as the new captain of their Davis Cup
team following the sackings of previous skippers Jordi Arrese
and Juan Avendano.

Sanchez Vicario is the eldest brother of women's former
world No. 1 Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and has made a living
as a coach and television commentator since his retirement from
the ATP circuit.

"Emilio is a great professional, a hard worker and a proven
success," Spanish Tennis Federation president Pedro Munoz told a
news conference on Saturday.

The decision to discard Arrese and Avedano, who led Spain to
victory in the 2004 Davis Cup, was a controversial one and did
not meet with the approval of all the players in the Spanish

But Munoz said that Sanchez Vicario's appointment now had
the full support of all the players in the present squad.

"All of the players without exception said that they were
united behind my decision."

Spain lost to Slovakia in this year's World Group first
round tie though victory over Italy last month kept them in the
elite group for 2006 where they will open with a tie against
