LUXEMBOURG -- Chanda Rubin won her first match in more than
a year, beating Germany's Martina Muller 6-3, 6-0 on Tuesday to
reach the second round of the Fortis Championships.
Rubin, ranked 342nd in the world, last won at Cincinnati in the
summer of 2005, but needed only 53 minutes on the indoor hardcourt
to beat the 37th-ranked Muller. After winning at Cincinnati, Rubin
aggravated a left knee injury and then lost in the first round of
the U.S. Open.
Qualifier Karin Knapp of Italy defeated seventh-seeded Anna-Lena
Groenefeld of Germany 6-0, 6-4, and Ukraine's Alona Bondarenko beat
No. 8 seed Mary Pierce of France 6-3, 6-3.
Fifth-seeded Francesca Schiavone, the world's 14th-ranked player
and star of the Fed Cup team that won the final against Belgium 10
days ago, beat Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands in straight
sets, 6-4, 6-3.
Roberta Vinci, Schiavone's Fed Cup doubles partner, defeated
Tatjana Malek of Germany, 6-4, 6-3.
In other another first-round match, Nathalie Dechy of France
beat Austria's Sybille Bammer 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Dechy will next play
second-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia.
