ADELAIDE, Australia -- American Paul Goldstein beat
Australian Peter Luczak 7-6 (8), 6-1 Wednesday to become the first
player to advance to the knockout phase of the round-robin Adelaide
Luczak broke Goldstein's service for a 2-0 lead, but immediately
gave it back by dropping serve and did not earn another break point
in the match.
Goldstein won the tiebreaker 10-8 and then raced away with the
second set, wrapping up the victory in just over 90 minutes.
Top-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia also advanced to the
quarterfinals following a 6-1, 6-2 win over Alun Jones of
Australia. Djokovic will play Goldstein on Friday in the
Third-seeded Radek Stepanek scored a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over
Russian Evgeny Korolev and Arnaud Clement of France beat Germany's
Benjamin Becker 7-5, 6-1 in other round-robin matches.
Lleyton Hewitt was idle Wednesday and plays his next match
Thursday against Russia's Igor Kunitsyn.
The 32-player Adelaide tournament is the first to try the ATP
Tour's new round-robin format in 2007. A dozen other tournaments
are expected to experiment with the format during the season.
