BARCELONA, Spain -- Top-seeded Francesca Schiavone and
Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States won opening matches Monday
at the Barcelona KIA Open.
Schiavone, seeking her first title after three runner-up
finishes in 2006, advanced when fellow Italian Romina Oprandi
retired because on an injured right arm after losing the first set
Shaughnessy, seeded sixth, beat Spanish wild card Nuria
Llagostera Vives 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round of the
tournament, the finale of the women's clay-court season.
Third-seeded Emilie Loit of France beat Timea Bacsinszky of
Switzerland 7-5, 6-3. Tatjana Malek of Germany advanced when Iveta
Benesova of the Czech Republic quit because a back injury while
trailing Malek 5-2 in the first set.
