PALERMO, Sicily -- Eva Birnerova of the Czech Republic upset
top-seeded Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands 6-2, 6-4 in the
first round of the Palermo International on Monday.
Krajicek, coming off her first Grand Slam quarterfinals at
Wimbledon, was outplayed on the slower clay by Birnerova, ranked 79
places lower than Krajicek at 111th.
Krajicek was elevated to the top seed after 2006 runner-up
Tathiana Garbin withdrew with an injury.
Garbin hurt her right foot during Italy's Fed Cup semifinal
victory over France over the weekend.
Italy's Flavia Pennetta defeated sixth-seeded Aravane Rezai 6-3,
7-5, while Sandra Kloesel of Germany beat Tsvetana Pironkova of
Bulgaria 6-2, 6-3.
Rezai, of France, has beaten Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova
this year but could not match Pennetta.
Four-time Palermo winner Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain opted
not to defend the title she has won the past three years.
