Gasquet, Simon among first-round winners

BUCHAREST, Romania -- Top-seeded Richard Gasquet defeated Oscar Hernandez of Spain 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday in the first round at the BCR Open Romania.

The 12th-ranked Frenchman, who entered as a wild card, dominated Hernandez with his serve after losing the first set.

Defending champion Gilles Simon of France cruised past Evgeny Korolev of Russia 6-1, 6-2.

Teimuraz Gabashvili of Russia defeated fifth-seeded Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, while sixth-seeded Carlos Moya -- who reached the final in 1996 -- beat Alberto Martin 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-4 in an all-Spanish match.

Victor Crivoi of Romania defeated Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, while countryman Victor Hanescu lost to Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Also, Nicolas Almagro of Spain defeated Somdev Devvarman of India 6-7 (6), 6-2, 7-5; Jose Acasuso beat Argentine countryman Diego Junqueira 6-2, 6-4; and Adrian Cruciat of Romania defeated Filippo Volandri 7-5, 4-0 after the Italian player retired with a back injury.
