Top seeds Williams, Verdasco advance

ACAPULCO, Mexico -- Top-seeded Venus Williams reached the quarterfinals of the Mexican Open, defeating Kaia Kanepi of Estonia 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday night.

Fernando Verdasco, the top seed on the men's side, advanced earlier in the day with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Lukasz Kubot of Poland.

Both second-seeded players also advanced in the clay-court tournament.

Agnes Szavay of Hungary beat Renata Voracova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-1, and Fernando Gonzalez of Chile defeated Victor Hanescu of Romania 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-1.
