Craig Haubert (2:59 PM)
Welcome everybody to today's chat!
Craig Haubert (3:00 PM)
Shortly I'll be joined by Phelon Jones and Sidell Corley, high school teammates at McGill Toolen Catholic High in Alabama.
Craig Haubert (3:01 PM)
Phelon committed to Miami earlier this spring and Sidell committed to Florida after last weekend's Orange and Blue spring game.
Craig Haubert (3:02 PM)
After we get to your questions for both of these players, I'll get to the rest of your recruiting questions.
Craig Haubert (3:03 PM)
I already see a ton of questions about Jimmy Clausen's verbal commitment. If you're into that story, make sure you check out Tom Luginbill's column on the pressure he'll be under that came out today.
Phelon Jones (3:05 PM)
It's a pleasure to be on ESPN.com
Sidell Corley (3:05 PM)
I'm looking forward to your quesitons
John (King of Prussia, PA)
Sidell and Phelon -- does it feel good to know that your decision is over with and you can conentrate on your senior year without too much distraction?
Sidell Corley (3:06 PM)
It took a lot of pressure off me. It's a big relief and I feel really good about my decision.
Phelon Jones (3:06 PM)
It is a big relief because now I can just focus on my senior season and I don't have to worry about all the other schools, I can just focus on one school.
Uncle Abe (Clinton,MD)
Phelon, you know your uncles, aunts and cousins here in Maryland are proud of you and we will be in the stands cheering for the 'Canes at your ACC road games. Congratulations to both you guys. Question for both of you: Since it looks like McGill Toolen has some great players returning (at least two), what are some of your individual and team goals for your senior season?
Sidell Corley (3:08 PM)
One of my goals is to be a leader and help out the team, get to the championship and win it.
Phelon Jones (3:08 PM)
Some of our other goals is of course go to states, get other people on our team recruited and get everyone on our team a chance to get looked at.
Phelon Jones (3:08 PM)
We'd like to get all the seniors looked at and some of the juniors too.
Phelon Jones (3:09 PM)
Adrian Cole and Ben Harvey, a Class of 2008 prospect, we're trying to help them out.
Phelon---Welcome to the U... what helped you choose the U over the other schools?
Phelon Jones (3:10 PM)
I grew up liking Miami and when I went down there, I got to see everyone, I met the track coach, the football coaches, I got to see the spring game, I got to see how it really was in Miami, and that's all I needed to see.
Coach Jones (3:10 PM)
This is Phelon's father, and I can second that he's always liked Miami. He's got offers from USC and Texas, and Miami is what he really wants.
Hey Sidell and Phelon- now that you are commited, is the University of Alabama completely out of the picture?
Phelon Jones (3:11 PM)
No, they're not completely out. If something to the team or to Miami, there's a chance I could decommit and look at other schools and Alabama could be in the top schools, but if nothing happens, I will be going to Miami.
Coach Corley (3:12 PM)
This is Sidell's dad. As long as Miami and Florida keep their obligations, they'll keep their obligations. We don't anticipate being dropped, and we don't anticipate dropping our commitments.
Zack (Miami, FL)
Hey Phelon, welcome to the 'Canes family! What position do you see yourself playing at the U? Also which current or past hurricane do you think your game most resembles? Thanks and looking forward to watching you at the OB!
Phelon Jones (3:13 PM)
I see myself playing corner, maybe some receiver and special teams. I see myself like Antrel Rolle because of his quickness to the ball and his tackling ability.
Sidell Corley (3:14 PM)
I see myself playing DE, and as for a Gator, maybe Brown. He was a big guy playing DE.
What made you guys choose Florida and Miami over in state schools?(Alabama,Auburn)
Sidell Corley (3:15 PM)
the instate schools are great schools, but the coaches at Florida, all of them, I had a great relationship with them. And my major sports management, they have a great program there. I just get along with all the coaches really well and fit in well and have a chance to play early.
Phelon Jones (3:16 PM)
Both Alabama and Auburn both have great programs, but Miami just showed me something that nobody else showed me. Coach Coker, everybody down there was great and everything just fell into place.
Have either of you guys started to or are going to start recruiting other players to join you at your respective schools - like McCray and Howard did with you Sidell? and if so who are some players you are targeting?
Sidell Corley (3:18 PM)
I talked to McCray last night, and we need some good running backs. So this is a shout out to Chris Rainey and Armando Allen. We just want to build another Number one recruiting class, that's our goal
Phelon Jones (3:19 PM)
We trying to get a Georgia linebacker named Allen Bailey and also looking at Damien Berry, he lives in Florida. We're going to call Major Wright, trying to get him to come down here too. Because we're trying to get the number one recruiting class!
Craig Haubert (3:20 PM)
Thanks very much to our guests today, Phelon and Sidell were very candid.
Craig Haubert (3:20 PM)
Sounds like they're having a lot of fun and will have a good rivalry in college.
Craig Haubert (3:23 PM)
Lets get to some of your questions
David (Wooster, OH)
When will your first rankings come out?
Craig Haubert (3:26 PM)
We are still going through film - we are closing in on 500 reports and still going. We will release our 150 in July - don't have an excat date yet.
Dave, Ann Arbor
Hey Craig How big was the Ryan Mallett commitment yesterday for UM??? I've heard he can throw a football 81 yards...
Craig Haubert (3:29 PM)
It was big because he fits Michigan's scheme - good at play action and the 5-7 step passing game and has the arm to drive the ball vertcially. As with all Michigan quarterbacks he will not provide much with his legs - he is the perfect fit for an offense that features the power running game.
Craig Haubert (3:30 PM)
on the 81 yards? where did you hear that? that is pretty far even for Dan Marino.
Chris (Milwaukee, WI)
Can you give us an update on the Badgers? Also would Nick Toon have become a national recruit if he had not committed so early to Wisconsin?
Craig Haubert (3:32 PM)
so far they have only landed Toon - we have not seen him yet - but he does come from wide receiver lineage and has good size - we will post his report as soon as we can see him.
James (Dallas, TX)
Will Clausen lure other top recruits to ND with him?
Craig Haubert (3:35 PM)
You would believe yes. He came out and said he wanted to commit early to start working on other top players. With a place like ND academics play a role - it is not just who wants to go there or who they want. Who can be admitted plays a role. That being said Clausen will play a role in helping to land players that ND can get.
Craig Haubert (3:36 PM)
In addition they need to load up on some players at wide receiver because they will lose some players at that position after the '06 season. Clausen is a nice way to help lure big time receivers to ND so they are headed in the right direction
Michael (Warsaw, IN)
Can you explain the process you go through in ranking players?
Craig Haubert (3:41 PM)
It is a bit of a lengthy process and can be tough to explain in a chat but in a nutshell the important aspects are that no player is graded or ranked without ever having been seen on film or in person. we will not grade or rank a player we have not seen against a player we have seen and will not place a grade on a player only on combine results - even though they are a useful tool - they are not an accurate indicator of how well a player plays the game
AJ Boise ID
Who are the top WRs in this class?
Craig Haubert (3:43 PM)
there are several talented players at this position in '07 like Greg Little and j.R. Hemmingway who are special prospects. Little will be joining us next week on the chat. Duval Kamara is a monster of a receiver and reminds us of USC receiver Dwayne Garrett .
Craig Haubert (3:45 PM)
This is a group much like last year that is very tall in relationship to the top 10-15 prospects we have graded so far. The trend continues to the big rceiver that can create mismatches in the red area.
Got to take a UT question. Do you think the Vols recruiting will bounce back after a below average year?
Craig Haubert (3:46 PM)
Yes I do - but it is key for the Vols to bounce back on the field. Recruits never really spoke about the Vols as a program in decline - so if they win I think they will land top players in better numbers in '07
chris ( ABQ, NM)
How are the New Mexico Lobos doing?
Craig Haubert (3:49 PM)
Interesting question - schools like New Mexico and other "mid majors" need to play a bit of the waiting game and see what players they have targeted realize they won't get the offer from the bigger schools - expect more activity from schools like New Mexico starting in mid fall.
TOM (York, Pa)
Is Clausen as good as everyone says or will could he just be overhyped?
Craig Haubert (3:52 PM)
Physically yes he is that good - but there are many "x" factors that can determine how good a player is at the college level. You can read a more in depth answer to this question in the article written by Tom Luginbill on the recruiting home page.
Who are the top linebacker in the 2007 class?
Craig Haubert (3:55 PM)
still doing evals but some early top players at the linebacker position are OLB's Texas commit Keenan Robinson and Texas A&M commit Derek Stephens.
Craig Haubert (3:56 PM)
I like Dominique Buchanan and Chris Strong inside - to name a few.
Craig Haubert (3:59 PM)
That is all the time I have for today - thanks for joining me. Tom will be joining you next week with special guests WR Greg Little and his teamamte Jonathan Smith who has committed to North Carolina. Have a great weekend and enjoy the draft.
