Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:01 AM)
'Hey everyone. Thanks for coing by - appreciate everyone's interest and patience with ESPN Fantasy Baseball... let's get it on...
After this whole reset thing with ESPN, Geoff Jenkins, O' Dog, and Cole Hamels is available. Do I drop Magglio for Jenkins, Iguchi for O' Dog, and Bedard for Hamels?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:06 AM)
No, no and sort of. Look, we can all complain about the reste - no one is happy, but it is what it is. So the question is, knowing the playing field, what do you do now? And this is a great question. That said, Jenkins is a streaky player and I expect Mags to have a better season over the long haul. I like Iguchi as well - Hudson is underrated, that one's a push but personally, I like the CWS offense slightly more than AZ. And finally, Hamels is all sorts of fantasy yummy and would grab him asap, but Bedard is legit too. Don't bail on him - find someone else to dump for Cole.
how would we log on to FB insider? using our espn login? are all the problems fixed, or due you forsee more due to high traffic
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:09 AM)
You won't have to do anything. Just login as you normally would with your ESPN account and you should have access by Friday. Just clicking on an Insider article that is fantasy related will give you access. As for the problems, I can't predict the future, but so far, so good.
For WHIP and ERA please rank these pitchers: Soria, Merideth, Capps. Also: Do you have any inside info. on where the next closer apears?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:11 AM)
I say Capps, Soria and Meredith. Capps has a very good shot at being a closer soon - Torres got rocked again last night and then Soria. Meredith is terrfic but has the least chance of saves. All are good middle guys but might as well get ones that also have high save upside.
Porter (Syracuse, NY)
Chuck James is a free agent..should he be??
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:14 AM)
No, he shouldn't be. Obviously, he's been sick so far this year but it's not unexpected. I had him as a sleeper this year (as did others), especially based his stats in August and September last year, where he finished strong. James is legit.
Dan Ziola, Ypsilanti, Mich.
Still can't access my team...You guys totally suck. What's worse...I paid for this league 2 years ago. I WANT MY MONEY BACK !!!!!
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:18 AM)
Hey Dan: I hear your frustration and all i can do is apologize. You deserved better - everyone did. And does. You should be able to access your team now - the tech team is still finishing up a handful of leagues so if for some reason you can't, you will be able to soon. As for the money back, we're issuing full refunds for the 2007 season to all (and you are still prize eligible) - if you have questions about the refunds, please call 1-888-549-ESPN and you can talk to a real live human. Thanks again for your patience.
Kevin, Boston MA
I was at the game at Fenway last nite. Felix was absolutely filthy. Is 17+ wins, 2.50 ERA, 200k's within reach?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:19 AM)
Absolutely. Look, the question with Felix has never been talent. And now that's he's 100% healthy... sky's the limit. I'd rather have him than Dice-K the rest of the season, except for wins.
What do I do with Adam Laroche?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:21 AM)
Sadly, you have to be patient. Unless you are in a shallow league where options are plentiful, there's nothing you can do but bench him for now and hope. You'll get nothing in trade value for him and chances are there is no one on your WW with as much upside. I'm shocked at how poorly he's started as well - I wasn't as high on him as others, but I didn't see a sub .100 BA. Anyways, it sucks, but nothing you can do but wait it out. He'll be better.
A-Rod didn't homer last night!! Time to cut bait?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:22 AM)
This made me laugh. Thanks, Al. Best question of the day so far.
How did you guys get stuck in the eye of the hurricane? After the fall, you guys have to do a live chat. Good luck.
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:23 AM)
Thanks, Joe. Look, we want to answer questions about fantasy baseball. All of them, good and bad.
Joe (Columbus, OH)
In a list of Teahen, Duncan, Ordonez and Burrell, who would be the odd man out?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:24 AM)
I say Burrell because he's the biggest batting average risk. I try to protect batting average at all costs - it's the hardest category to make up ground in and power is much more plentiful.
I post several, fantasy related questions, they never appear, but complaining and sarcastic comments (A-rod) show up even though they serve no beneficial fantasy purpose.....so now I will complain to see if this works? This chat room stinks.....what about Jered Weaver, will he be a fantasy star for years to come??
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:28 AM)
hey Rob, I hear ya, and sadly, there's not enough time to answer everyone. Lots of folks have questions about the game and I wanted to address those too. But I rpomise we'll talk baseball too. And no, frankly, I'm down on Jered. I mean, he's better than his brother, but then again, so am I. My concern with Jered coming into this year is that he uses a decent amount of deception in his pitches and going through the league again, plus the injury concerns, would make him overvalued in drafts based on last year's numbers. And they were. He's a #2-3 starer in AL Only leagues, no better
Tankersly & Lidge were available, I picked up Tank and dropped Oliver Perez (Teased Us Again) Good Move?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:30 AM)
Yes, I think so. I've been high on Tank (I call him Tank) since last year. His k/( rate is over 10. 10!! It's sick. And saves are harder to come by than starters. Olly is inconsistent at best. Rather have upside than a roller coaster, ya know?
What pitchers that are on the DL besides Petey and Colon should I stash away in my 2 DL spots? I have about 6 mil worth of cap space and we use last years salary.
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:33 AM)
Well, Carp is the obvious one and Randy Johnson will have a big year. think about Bill Bray in Cincy as well. Very good chance he could be a closer for them sometime this year - they love him there (remember, he was one of the keys to the Kearns/Lopez deal)
Why is there no accountablity at ESPN? Posting open letters and giving us free football teams (when ESPN previously previously advertised football would be free before screwing up the last time) doesn't cut it. We deserve a platform that works. I'm sorry, but someone should get fired.
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:36 AM)
You're right. You do deserve a platform that works. Period. As for accountability, our first priority is getting the game 100% right. After that, then we'll deal with accountability. Trust me.
James (Cambridge, UK)
If I've got Upton and Iwamura, is it time to let go of E. Encarnacion?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:37 AM)
Yeah, I think so. Encarnacion's upside is simialr to Iwamura's and I'm on board with the young D Rays.
Mr Buckeye (Columbus, Oh)
Rob can complain all he wants Michigan still sucks!!!! J. Maine or Ian Snell?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:40 AM)
LOL, Buck. Hey man, that's part of my gig, hearing all folks, no matter what they say. As for your question, Snell, definitely. I've been beating the Snell bandwagon for a while and they mocked me on the SportsCenter fantasy special for it. But over the 2nd half of last year, Snell had something like 88k's in 85 IP, same as Ben Sheets. LE-GIT.
Boy, the chatroom is angry today. Is Teix going to start driving in runs anytime soon?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:42 AM)
Yes, Andy and I think ist's all Tex's fault. Curses, Mark Teixeria! Curses I say! Listen, be pateint with tex. Remember he started slow last year too. He had a very strong second half and it's early.
Jeremy (Charlotte, NC)
Mr. Berry...love the chats and TRUM. Dellucci (I call him The Looch) and Catalanotto...are these guys automatic weekly starting OFers in a 5x5, 16 team league with OBP instead of BA? Am I better off with a full time player like Geoff Jenkins and/or Randy Winn instead? Thanks!
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:43 AM)
Hey Jeremy, thanks for the love. As soon as I am done here and doing some ESPN Video pieces, I'll be writing today's TRUM. I really like Little Cat and Randy Winn of the 4 guys you mention for your league.
Just read that Julio is out as closer in Florida. Does Owens take over? Which closer is next to fall?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:46 AM)
My guess is Henry Owens gets first shot but will have a VERY short leash. Did you see his last save op? He was Nook LaLoosh - all over the place. But he throws HARD. He's get first crack but my guess is Taylor Tankersly winds up the season with 12-15 saves,
Matt, please help. Just got offered Figgins for Penny/Henry Owens. Good deal?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:48 AM)
Well, it's always hard to answer tthese type of questions in a vacuum. What do you need? Who else is on your team? Is it a keeper league? What are the categories? All of these things effect a trade and it's potential benefit to your team. All of that said, yeah, I do that deal. You're clearly ina mix league. And generally in mix leagues, starting pitching is plentiful and as you'ev already seen, saves always come into the league (NEVER PAY FOR SAVES, KIDS). Speed is hard to come by. Do the deal.
Darren (Philly )
Hughes or Garza ? & Lidge or Armando Benitiz? & Huff or Wiggington?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:50 AM)
Garza will be up sooner, so I say him but both are terrific. Armando, since he at least has a closer gig. And I say Huff, who I feel is underrated, even though Ty is tearing it up. Over th e long hual, Huff will end w/ better numbers.
With the reset, shouldn't teams have an agreement that all previous moves should be honored from here on? Who gets the better end of this - Wright/Penny for Glaus/Webb? Thanks
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:55 AM)
Just like which American idol you vote for, that's a personal choice and should be decided by each league individually. But keep in mind that not all previous transactions were correct. In some cases folks tried to pick up a guy, couldn't, then someone else came after and WAS able to pick up that same player. That's among the reason the reset had to go back all the way. The transactions were flawed. I'd rather have Wright / Penny, but it's close.
Should Garza and Hughes both be owned now and stashed or wait it out ?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:57 AM)
Chirs, Yes and yes. Both will be up, both will be good. This year.
Dan (Edison, NJ)
Pick 2 out of these players: Erik Bedard, Dave Bush, Anthony Reyes.
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:57 AM)
Trying to do some quickies before I run out of time. Bush is the guy you drop.
Willy Taveras has looked AWFUL at the plate and now he's losing AB's to Finley! Finley! At this rate for Fast Willy to steal his 50 bases he'd have to steal 2 every time he gets on. Is it time to let him go? He's killing my team average.
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:58 AM)
I love Wily. And it's Finley. Finley! Don't worry. Wily will get it together, I promise.
You would really rather have Bedard than Bush? No way. Drop Teahen for C. James or Fancis?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (11:59 AM)
Yeah, I would. Bedard is a K machine and will have a huge year. I'd hold onto Teahen, would try to find a way to get James. No on Francis (I assume that's who you mean).
Roy (Fort Wayen, IN)
I thought you said ESPN Fantasy Rocked? Changing your opinion?
Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto (12:03 PM)
Ok, last question. I'll be back at 3pm to answer more of your questions. And yeah, obviously, myself and everyone on the ESPN Fantasy team are disappointed about the start of the season. It's still a good game and once we're past all this, you'll see a lot of cool features that aren't anywhere else. But again, I'm sorry. We're sorry. And we appreciate everyone's understanding and patience. We should be good to go going forward. Thanks everyone. Peace! Seacrest out.
