Craig Haubert (3:00 PM)
Welcome everyone -- Hope you had a great Holiday weekend and thanks for joining us. We have a busy chat ahead of us. I will start with some of your questions then at 3:15 we will pause and bring on Servite teammates and USC commits Shoemate and Kalil and then finish with some more of your questions.
Craig Haubert (3:01 PM)
so lets get started! And start getting your questions for Matt and DJ in!
Tod (Sedona, Az)
Craig- Sun Devil faithful want to know if Dennis Erickson is having a good first year recruiting. Does he have the juice to land some top 50 players?
Craig Haubert (3:02 PM)
Erickson will make a ASU a team to watch on the field and in recruiting. No news to report now as no one has given a verbal yet, but they are in on several ESPN 150 watch list players.
Craig Haubert (3:03 PM)
Some top talent showing early interest in ASU include talented TE Blake Ayles, RB Covaughn Deboskie, and OT Kyle Johnson.
How are the hurricanes doing so far?
Craig Haubert (3:06 PM)
He has not coached a game yet as the Head Coach, but in recruiting Shannon has seemed like a great fit. Nice finish to the '07 class and solid start to the '08 class. Taylor Cook is a nice addition at QB and more importantly Shannon is staying close to that schools roots and recruiting hard in South Florida. Cook is the only prep commit so far not from Florida.
Any chance that LB Sweat will stun some folks and choose ND over OSU? Seems that LB is a bigger need for Notre Dame than the Buckeyes. Your thoughts?
Craig Haubert (3:09 PM)
Big announcement set for tomorrow with Sweat. ND has been off to a good start with defensive prospects and would love to add Sweat I am sure, but a little more than 24 hours away I am saying the talented linebacker joins an impressive OSU class.
Can OkState continue having solid recruiting classes? How are they looking so far? Thank you.
Craig Haubert (3:13 PM)
I think so Stan. OU gets the most press in that state, but the Cowboys have landed some good players recently. It will be hard for them to wrestle attention away from the Sooners this year in recruiting as OU is putting together a strong class, but OSU is doing some good things. I love Tony Gillespie and in-state DT with size and play making ability - they will need to fight to hold onto him. Also nice addition with QB Kody Spano. OSU does well in Texas and should assemble a good solid class again this year.
Craig Haubert (3:14 PM)
lets pause for a second while i get Matt and DJ set up.
Matt, how big are your parents? What about your grandparents? Where do you get your size from? You and your brother are HUGE!
Matt Kalil (3:17 PM)
My dad's about 6-3 and my mom's 5-11. My grandpa have some cousins that are over 6-5, like 6-7, 6-8. I could have gotten it from there.
DJ, what position are you planning on playing at USC? What does Coach Carroll put in the water that high school all americans are willing to come in and be third and fourth stringers?
DJ Shoemate (3:18 PM)
They have me listed as an athlete. So they can put me wherever they want me to play. The best guys get to play if you go in there with some intensity.
Dave (Kirkland, WA)
DJ, Where would you most like to play in college?
DJ Shoemate (3:18 PM)
I like to get the ball in my hand. I feel like I'm a good threat on offense. I'll play wherever the coaches want me to play.
How much did your brother influence your decision?
Matt Kalil (3:19 PM)
That's one of my main reasons committing to SC. Knowing what SC is all about. Watching my brother and seeing how hard he worked. Right after I got the offer, I committed right away. That's the place I wanted to go.
Matt, did you visit your brother much while he was at USC? Did that make your decision any easier?
Matt Kalil (3:23 PM)
My whole sophomore year, I would go down to practice with my dad. It gave me an idea of what my campus was like. It made a huge impact on my decision.
Rupert J. Lloyd (Chicago)
DJ, are you a trash talker on the field? Or do you let your mad skills do the jabbering?
DJ Shoemate (3:23 PM)
I'm quiet. I try to pump myself up. I try to set an example to my teammates.
DJ, did Matt influence your decision at all?
DJ Shoemate (3:24 PM)
I committed before him. We kind of spoke about it when I got my opportunity. I feel like we talked about it. We kind of knew where we were going to go before.
Mike (Beckley, WV)
Matt and DJ- Do you guys have any dream matchups you'd like to play in during your college careers?
Matt Kalil (3:25 PM)
Probably just UCLA, from what happened last year.
Matt Kalil (3:25 PM)
UCLA or Notre Dame. Those are the two games I always watched.
DJ Shoemate (3:25 PM)
I would say the big schools that compete at high levels. I always want to be in a tight rope game until the end. Teams like UCLA, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida.
Matt Kalil (3:26 PM)
We play Ohio State our first year there.
Matt, do you feel any pressure in following your brother's footsteps to USC?
Matt Kalil (3:26 PM)
After watching my brother come out of there, he set such a high level. It's going to take a lot of hard work. Hopefully my hard work pays off and I can get a starting job early.
Jackson (Florence, Cali)
Hey DJ, does the alleged improper benefits scandal surrounding Reggie Bush concern you any?
DJ Shoemate (3:27 PM)
Not neccessarily. I would say if it was that big of a problem, it would be a lot bigger story. It came out a lot during signing day, so I thought that it was something that was brought up just during that time.
DJ & Matt, how do you feel about USC's basketball program next year? U got some talented recruits this year.
DJ Shoemate (3:29 PM)
Definitely. When I'm on campus, I always want to support the other teams. It's all about school spirit and showing that love. Whether it's tennis or girls volleyball. You want to respect them because they go out to the games and support you.
David Tse (Palm Bay, FL)
Matt, what lineman currently at USC do you most see yourself playing like?
Matt Kalil (3:29 PM)
A player I watch a lot is Sam Baker, the all-american. The thing I like about him is that he is always working and is working hard.
DJ, are you worried at all about playing time? USC has recruited many RBs the last couple of years.
DJ Shoemate (3:30 PM)
Like I said before, they're not only recruiting me as a RB. It's not limited to me. That's the great thing about being listed as an athlete. I'm not worried about the RB position, that will handle itself.
Do you think you will start this year?
Matt Kalil (3:31 PM)
I don't know. We'll see. They have a lot of good tackles right now. We'll see how it all turns out.
DJ, what are your main goals? All-Conference, All-American, Heisman?
DJ Shoemate (3:32 PM)
The thing that I'm going to set for myself is never settle for less. You just keep reaching for your goals. I'm going to always keep my goals high and remain focus and persuing my dream. I would like to be a Heisman, that's everyone's dream going into the NCAA. Of course I want to win the Heisman, but I also want to be a leader for the team.
Jordan (Dix Hills, NY)
Matt & DJ, how closely do you follow Coach Carroll & USC's recruiting process? Does it excite you when you hear about fellow recruits interest?
Matt Kalil (3:33 PM)
It's great knowing that Coach Carroll is out there getting all the top guys. It's a good thing because you get all those top guys working in practice. The best guys will play. That's why SC is such a good team, everyone's competing for a job.
Oliver (Scranton, PA)
DJ, do you play any other positions in high school? Do you think you'll switch positions at USC?
DJ Shoemate (3:34 PM)
The majority of time, I'm playing reciever. For some plays I am at RB. They have me listed as RB, WR, DB. It doesn't really matter.
Matt Kalil (3:35 PM)
I'm going to work my hardest and not let the fans down.
DJ Shoemate (3:35 PM)
Thank you for all the support. Continue to support us. I'll continue to work my hardest and not let you down. Thank you.
Buzzmaster (3:35 PM)
Thanks to DJ and Matt for taking part in the chat! USC got two talented players with their commitments!
Buzzmaster (3:38 PM)
And we'll wrap things up there for today, SportsNation. Craig's power went out and he won't be able to come back and chat with us. Sorry about that!
