Jon Brand (2:00 PM)
Hope everyone's having a great Friday afternoon. The weather's turning here in Baltimore and it's starting to really be spring. A great slate of games this weekend, including an ACC battle between Maryland and UVA. We've got Max Ritz and Bryn Holmes from Maryland here, so let's get chatting...
G.Doc ( West Philly, Pa)
Max, your thoughts on the mesh mullet and on which PA lacrosse store is the best to get some sick lax gear at?
Max Ritz (2:01 PM)
Not familiar with the mesh mullet, but it sounds like a potential fad in the Philly area. the best store to get "sick lax gear at" could be Competitive Edge, always has... always will.
Case Matheis, Darien, CT
To Bryn Holmes, What is it like playing on the same team with a former rival in high school lacrosse (Travis Reed)?
Bryn Holmes (2:02 PM)
I'm definitely glad he's on my team again, but it was great to play against compeititon like that...
You play top ranked Virginia on Saturday, in all honesty how do you think the game will turn out? Does Maryland have it in them to beat a very talented Virginia team ?
Max Ritz (2:03 PM)
I am biased... but yes i think we have what it takes to play with a team like Virginia. Like you said, theyre very talented, but saturday will be an exciting environment and a home game. ANything can happen.
Tommy Dixon (Bethesda, MD)
Bryn, coming from bigtime high school lacrosse at McDonough, was the transition to college lacrosse easier or harder than you expected?
Bryn Holmes (2:04 PM)
I feel like it was an easier transition. Getting the chance to play great competition in the MIAA prepared me for the next level. But dont get me wrong, the game is a lot faster here!
Maxwell, what is it like being a lacrosse player at the University of Maryland? What was it like playing with your brother at UMD? Did you lear a lot from the great Joe Walters and did older players mold your game? How often do you eat Chipotle on a weekly basis?
Max Ritz (2:08 PM)
Thanks for the question Casper. It was a great experience to play with Joe and Xander; definitely something i'll never forget. I think i eat Chip about 4-5 times a week... depends how many times DG and Nick Ward are up for it. Just for the record, Travis Reed gets single meat.
Ruben (College Park, MD)
We all know Maryland's freshman can put points on the board at attack, but what are your opinions on Virginia's own star freshman? Do you think the Brattons are more effective as shooters or as feeders to Rubeor, Glading, and Billings? Plus, how do you feel about having to face fifth year senior Peter Lamade along with the already powerful scoring offense Virginia has? p.s. You guys are awesome and I'm looking forward to seeing an upset this weekend. Ruben
Bryn Holmes (2:12 PM)
They're a very talented group of guys, the Brattons will have great careers I'm sure. I'm looking forward to the challenge, we've been preparing all week and I'm sure Saturday will be an intense atmosphere.\
Kenny, Cleveland OH
Bryn, What'd you think of the cover of the last issue of IL?
Bryn Holmes (2:14 PM)
I think it was awesome to be on the cover with my roomates Brian Phipps and Brian Farrell. It was an honor to represent Maryland lacrosse on the cover of such a prestigious lacrosse magazine.
Gunslinger (Anderson, SC)
Who would you say has the best shot on the UMD team?
Max Ritz (2:16 PM)
Tough question, I'd have to say our most accurate shooter would be Travis Reed, but Grant Catalino probably has the hardest shot.
Dan, New Jersey
Bryn, who's the toughest face-off you've gone against this season?
Bryn Holmes (2:18 PM)
I've faced a lot of tough competition this year, but I'd say Burns from UNC was the biggest challenge so far.
Who is the most underrated player in division 1?
Max Ritz (2:22 PM)
Will Dalton is very underrated for how valuable he is to our team. He faces-off, plays on a midfield line and several times this year has scored huge goals for us. ex UMBC, Carolina, Towson....
Travis (Anderson, SC)
Max, What would be your greatest accomplishment so far in your college career?
Max Ritz (2:24 PM)
Getting the opportunity to start as a Freshman and Sophomore in back-to-back Final Fours near my hometown (Philadelphia) were without a doubt my most memorable accomplishments of my career.
Hunter (Towson MD)
Bryn, how bout Maryland's defensive middie line with you Ferrell and Reynolds. What's it like playing on that unit?
Bryn Holmes (2:26 PM)
It's amazing playing with such talented players. Everyone brings something different to the table; we also have Dean Hart and Dan Burns who have added solid depth to the unit. It's a collective effort when it comes to defense at Maryland.
Grant Catalino (Rochester, NY)
Who would you say has the nicest flow on the team?
Max Ritz (2:29 PM)
Travis Reed and Brian Farrell definitely talk about their flow the most, but in his day Scottie Tompkins had something special going. We're all waiting for him to grow it out again...
Bryn Holmes (2:29 PM)
I don't do flow.
Zork Blasdell, NY
Who is the toughest pole to beat one-on-one in the NCAA? Who is the smartest long pole? i play long pole and i am seeing some great longpole stuff this year.
Max Ritz (2:32 PM)
In my four years I've been guarded by some really tough defensemen, but some of the toughest were Mike Evans from Hopkins and Tony McDevitt from Duke. To be honest though, Joe Cinosky is the toughest guy for me to beat. The best longpole I ever played with/against was Ryan Clarke, easily the most underrated player I've been around at Maryland.
Jon Brand (2:33 PM)
Ok, thanks to everyone for putting in questions - Max and Bryn had to leave for practice.
Jon Brand (2:34 PM)
Be sure to tune into the big game this weekend on ESPN2 - the first ever regular season live on the Deuce. It should be a good one. Until next week...
