AJ Mass (10:55 AM)
Good morning again, gang. It's time for another fantasy baseball chat. Who's going to kick things off?
Mike (Tampa, FL)
Finally a fantasy stud gets traded to the AL mid season. Rejoice AL only leaguers! Any reason not to use up all but lets say $5 of my FAAB on Tex? Also, who do I drop for him, Wilkerson or Vidro?
AJ Mass (10:59 AM)
Assuming that your next FAAB bidding period is coming at the end of the week and there won't be a stunner coming today or tomorrow (which I doubt) then yes, I'd go all-in on Tex. The only player I'd possibly be holding out for was maybe Holliday, but with the Rockies "in it" that ship has apparently sailed. As for who to drop, I have no real preference there... maybe keep Wilkerson if my arm was twisted.
Scott (Springfield, VA)
I have the most FAAB money left in a National League only league. Blake and Kotchman are available this week, who should I grab if they remain the top two free agents on the board? I have Pujols, Delgado, and Cantu, so position isn't an issue.
AJ Mass (11:01 AM)
Personally, I like Blake better by a hair, but it really is about even based on past performance. I guess my leaning to Blake has to do with the lack of Chipper and more stable table setters in LA.
I'm in a keeper league and would like to make a trade because I desperately need pitching help. Which player would you rather keep for 2009: Vlad or Prince?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
I'd rather keep Prince. Vlad's not getting any younger. (I realize Prince isn't either... he's not immune to aging, but hopefully you get what I mean.)
AJ Mass: Because of the nature of his injury, getting hit by a ball, I'd wait. I'm always wary of a pitcher getting the flinchies and not being too comfortable until I see it for myself. Haha, so much for that huh?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
Doug is referring to my comment yesterday that I would not start Chris Young, b/c I wanted to see for myself how he handled his return. I stand by my decision... he could just as easily gotten hammered and not been OK. The fact that he did so well is a good thing, and I don't mind missing out on one good rather than being wrong and seeing my WHIP and ERA soar unnecessarily.
dylan porter centre,al
since his amazing preformance at the all star game what expectations do you have for josh hamilton
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
I had an article go up yesterday dealing a bit with this... I'm no believer in any HR Derby jinx, but Hamilton's power profile does suggest he won't keep up his current HR success rate. He'll still reach 40, but don't expect much more.
"I don't mind missing out on one good rather than being wrong and seeing my WHIP and ERA soar unnecessarily." So then why did you choose to bench Brett Myers and Start Ben Sheets over Big Z? Looks like the ERA and WHIP took a hit anyway?
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
Looks like Doug is going to be the "prediction police"? I'm offering my opinion, which is never going to be 100% correct, but that doesn't mean I don't have solid ground for my decisions... besides, you're taking those out of context. The Q asked me was which ONE I would start Sheets or Z. I though Sheets would do better. I was wrong this time. It happens. If I actually owned both I would still likely have started both. With Myers, I said if I was even asking the Q about whether or not to start Myers vs. Nats, then why not cut him, since your confidence was that low in the first place.
Matt (Providence, RI)
Doug from "A-Town" . . . The Monday Morning Manager.
How pissed do you think all the Lackey owners who benched him are? That is why you always start your aces right AJ?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
Exactly. But if you come to a chat and ask me "Lackey OR Doug Davis" and I say Lackey, that doesn't mean a) I think Davis is awful, nor does it mean you should start (or bench) either one. Don't overthink things.
Justin (Queens, NY)
Desperate for a 3rd baseman...who do you like: the inconsistant Kouz, Mora, Reynolds, or hot shot Stewart or Vazquez? THX!
AJ Mass (11:15 AM)
I do like Stewart, and think the Rocks will give him the PT. Reynolds may get some increased value if D-Backs pull a deal. I don't like Mora or Vazquez.
Please tell me what holds for my future this year. Will I start hitting soon? Maybe I should ask Doug from A-Town, he seems to have some answers.
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
He'll definitely have some answers on October 1. Jones hasn't "not been hitting" he's just "not been playing" and since it does appear the Braves are folding up shop, I wouldn't expect too many at-bats for Larry from here on out.
Do you think Tulo outperforms Guzman the rest of the way? I want to dump Guzman for C Davis or A Jones, but I'm not sure if Tulo is ready?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
I think it's worth the risk. Jones is putting up very solid numbers and I think he is the better selection of the two.
Grayson (Rochester, NY)
Hey AJ! What's the deal with Liriano? I know his last Triple A start wasn't great, but with Livan struggling, why hasn't he been called up yet?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Who knows? It's very hard to see what Minnesota has been waiting for. The only thing i can think of is that the Twins love the fact that Livan gives them a chance to rest the pen every time he goes out, and they do end up winning more than not even if he does give up 5+ a game. Perkins should be moved to the pen and Liriano called up, but they're just not making the move.
Marty McFly (1985)
I was wondering where my Sports Almanac ended up. Doug from A-Town, can I please have it back?
Scott (White Plains, NY)
Better performer the rest of the way-- Laird or Salty? who sees more time (if one of them is not traded)?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
I think Laird will get more PT in Texas, assuming no deal. Salty had a chance to lock up the job while Gerald was out, and failed miserably.
Putz blows another save. Will Morrow finally take over the closer role once and for all?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
Putz is the Mariners closer and the team is going nowhere. If the M's are serious about thinking that Morrow should be moved to rotation in 09, then I think they might as well let Putz workout his issues. Having said that, Morrow will get chances to save games either way, but I don't think he'll get them all.
AJ, please rank these SS the rest of the way...Aviles, Theriot, O. Cabrera. Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
That order seems right to me.
Edgucated Guess Please: Most saves going forward Morrow, Yates, Devine, or Corpas? Thanks You.
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
Morrow followed closely by Devine.
So you're not on the Davis bandwagon? Since Blaylock just effectively ended his career with the Rangers, I would think that Davis's value just got a little stronger. Davis was even seen taking ground balls at 3b before last nights game. It looks like his audition will last to the end of the season. Is it the K's or do you just not trust his swing at this point? He seems to have vastly improved his lefty weakness so he has at least shown the capacity to adjust. Could you break him down for us? Those numbers are hard to ignore. Thanks.
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
I didn't say I don't like Davis, just that I like Jones a bit better. Adam has been around the league a few times now and seems to have settled in. Davis may well end up higher on my 09 board, but I hesitate a bit... after all remember how Jay Bruce dipped after a huge start.
Scott, Groton CT
AJ: I love the way you break down the numbers and unearth hidden trends. Do you have some numbers to comfort Volquez owners ready to panic?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
His base peripherals are better than Sabathia and Santana. However, the Dusty "overworking his pitchers" factor is countering that. I don't think it's panic time, but I think it might be a long September.
I should assume that you think Street will be traded, based on your RP ranking above?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Yes, that Devine getting saves was dependent on Street being moved.
Fernando (Pembroke Pines)
Hey AJ, will Chone Figgins ever get his average up? It seems like 2007 avg was a fluke and he is reverting back to his 2006 avg.
AJ Mass (11:38 AM)
Chone's issue is that he's hitting fewer line drives and more ground balls, which would be a good thing if his wheels were 100%. I see this as a sign they are not. That to me, is the only thing keeping the BA down.
Watching the twins game last night I think I heard the scariest 6 words in baseball. "Now the bases loaded for Punto" With everett and his .189 average getting called up, will the twins look to pick up a bat?
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
To me the six scariest words at the ballpark are "Please rise as Carl Lewis sings..." but that's just me. Actually Punto is hitting .379 with RISP, and I've heard that Everett is being shopped around. I think you'll be seeing a lot of Nick.
One last time, are you starting for Cy Young winner Chris Carpenter today against the Braves?
AJ Mass (11:42 AM)
I would have no qualms about giving Carpenter the nod against Atlanta, no.
AJ Jolly, MT
Clay Buchholz, Armando Galarraga, Mike Pelfrey or D. Lowe....which TWO guys would you want on your team?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
I definitely want Lowe. Torn between Pelfrey and Galarraga, but probably go with Mike as he's slightly more consistent.
Matt (Fraggle Rock)
rollins /josh johnson for kazmir/cojack...who wins?
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
Better stats from here to end of season, probably Rollins/JJ. Which pair would I personally feel more comfortable with, Kaz/CJ. I think it's close in value and a fair deal for both.
big unit, gallagher, myers or snell from here on out? Need QSs and Ws. Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:48 AM)
Big Unit actually looks fresh of late. I think I'd go with him.
Closer hunter (LA)
Hey AJ! Any chance Ziegler takes over as closer after Street is traded? He has been ridiculous so far.
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
He absolutely has been ridiculous, but I think he stays as setup man if Street is traded. Doesn't have the dominance that a Devine has.
Do you forsee Kevin Yooouuuukkkkkkkkk-ilis' annual dropoff this year or will he be a solid starter from here on out?
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
It's not so much a dropoff to bad stats... it's just that he put up Top-20 kind of first-half numbers that make his second-half numbers sure to pale by comparison. But that doesn't preclude him from being a solid starter.
Erick Aybar or Nick Punto for DEEP AL league MI?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Punto. Not even close.
David (Atlanta, GA)
Looking out the window. I see ominous clouds and Turner field. I wouldn't start Carpenter just because there could be weather delays, but that's just me.
AJ Mass (11:52 AM)
A good point, David. Though I'd rather get two solid IP and see him pulled early than get no stats. After all, I'm not avoiding LA pitchers in case there's a quake either.
AJ! Do I sell high on Jurrjens??
AJ Mass (11:54 AM)
Given the Braves offensive issues, the wins may not be there, but I think pitching is more than that. Jurjjens will be fine in the other categories, so I'd hold on to him, but if wins are what you need, then yes, look to move him.
What do you think of Justin Upton for next season? Thinking about unloading for him and Longoria.
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
I think Upton could hit 30 HR next season if things fall right, and without oblique injury bothering him.
AJ Mass: (11:52 AM ET ) A good point, David. Though I'd rather get two solid IP and see him pulled early than get no stats. After all, I'm not avoiding LA pitchers in case there's a quake either. ...That doesn't work for those of us nearing in on the Maximum start limit
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
Not every answer is going to fit every set of rules, Ryan. I'm in a league where IP count as a stat, so I'd rather start a guy who will go 7 than a guy who might get rain delayed... but in general, I'd take the chance on Carpenter, b/c I don't think he gets hurt by a lengthy delay, b/c I don't think they run him back out to the mound after it.
Not starting Chris Young who had a skull/nose injury not an arm injury because you fear your era/whip will go up ? But then you say start Carpenter who is coming off an arm injury and hasn't pitched in the majors in like a year..what's that all about? Wouldn't you fear he would make your ERA/WHIP rise as well?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
It's a fair point, Mike. The difference I'm making between the two isn't physical... it's mental. I have no doubt that both were physically capable of doing the job... with Young my concern was that he might not have been mentally ready to step back on a big league mound.
Gary (Boulder, CO)
What is your favorite fantasy baseball format: H2H, Roto, points? How many teams? AL/NL? What does THE AJ Mass prefer?
AJ Mass (12:03 PM)
I prefer roto to H2H, as I feel H2H is far more luck based and lends itself to strategies I despise, like pulling players on Sundays "to protect a lead". I prefer NL-only, because I enjoy watching NL games more. Number of teams doesn't matter, but I like to see owners have to go deeper in talent pool than all having a lineup of All-Stars, yet also have waiver wire options. 12 works.
AJ Mass (12:04 PM)
Looks like I'm out of time, folks... thanks for the Q's. It's always a pleasure chatting with you all... we'll see you the next time on Villa Allegre.
