Terry Blount (1:00 PM)
Hello folks, Road racing is behind us and it's off to Michigan. What's on your mind?
Nando (Washington, DC)
How about AJ Allmendinger? He's looking like a top 10 racer each week since they got him that new Crew Chief? Could he and Brian Vickers contend as a team for the chase next season?
Terry Blount (1:03 PM)
No doubt about it. AJ has done a remarkable job there since returning. And Jay Frye is the excecutive of the year in NASCAR. The Red Bull team is on the rise. AJ deserves to keep his ride and Red Bull needs to find sponsorship to put Scott Speed in a third car.
Mark (Mount Airy, MD)
Hey Terry, Would you like to see a road course race in The Chase???? If so, which track would you prefer, Infineon or Watkins Glen??????
Terry Blount (1:04 PM)
Yes I would. If you're going to road race, then one should be in the Chase. I'd love to go to Frisco in Sept.
Dylan (Rochester, Ny)
Reports have Mears close to signing a deal with RCR to the fourth team, so who would then be viewed as the favorite to replace Ryan Newman in the 12 car?
Terry Blount (1:06 PM)
Mears has to decide which team he thinks gives him the best long-tern chance at winning ocnsistently. I's take RCR on that one, but the 12 car has a guaranteed spot next year. The new RCR car won't have that for the first five races. Stremme probably will get the No. 12 ride.
Are there pit strategy problems for the 88 team? Seems like since the win (a long time ago) that the 88 team has been the poster team for bad pit stops. Terry what are your thoughts?
Terry Blount (1:08 PM)
Eury admits he made a bad decision at The Glen. Bit the 88 was getting way less fuel mileage than the other cars, so that's why they stayed out longer. This time, it was one lap too long.
Lately Knaus is emphazing the Hendrick org as a whole rather than the 48 team. Any chance that he moves out of the box on the 48 and into a leadership role at Hendrick if they don't win it this year?
Terry Blount (1:09 PM)
Chad loves being a crew chief, but he's probably destined to do bigger and better things in the future. I don't think the change is coming next year, but it will come at some point.
Great battle between Kyle and Burton at the end of the Nationwide race. KB took a few shots at Burton during the post-race interview. Was there much radio chatter during the race after Burton got spun out?
Terry Blount (1:11 PM)
No, just boys being boys. Jeff always says he races guys the way they race him, so he came and got Kyle after Kyle wrecked them. That was a really fun race to watch, proof positive that road racing has its' exciting moments.
Don ( Charlotte,NC
Terry, do you see Montoya hanging around much longer with a top 20 car team. I know he has loyalty with Chip, but I think he will be looking next year, or sooner?
Terry Blount (1:15 PM)
JPM is pretty loyal to Chip, but it's still a business and you hav to prove to the driver that' you're capable of racing up front. The Ganassi cars aren't there right now, but they have gotten better recently. In the end, drivers usually go where they think they have the best chance of winning, or where they can make the most money. Usually, those two things are the same.
David (Jackson, KY)
Just wondering -- how is it determined which races you attend and which Newt, Marty, etc., go to? Do you all get to pick or are they assigned?
Terry Blount (1:16 PM)
We pick, but we have to make sure at least one of us is at each event.
before reed got in the big crash what was wrong
Terry Blount (1:16 PM)
A better question is this: What isn't wrong with that team?
Mark (Mount Airy, MD)
Will Roush/Fenway return to the winners circle on Sunday?????
Terry Blount (1:17 PM)
Wouldn't surprise me. Carl loves that track. It has senimental value to him since it's the place where he made his Cup debut.
David (Jackson, KY)
So it's going to be McCumbee in the 2nd full-time Petty car next year? I was hoping for someone more experienced, but alas ...
Terry Blount (1:18 PM)
Nothing is etched in stone yet, except that Kyle's day as a full-time driver are over. Kyle is a great guy, but it's time to move on if Petty Enterprises hopes to improve.
Chris (Richmond, VA)
Is the Mauricia Grant v. NASCAR lawsuit going to get uglier, or is there a reasonable resolution to the matter coming in the near future?
Terry Blount (1:19 PM)
Things like this rarely have a reasonable resolution.
Any update on a possible sponsor for the #6?
Terry Blount (1:20 PM)
Haven't heard, but I'd be very surprised if Roush Fenway fails to find a primary sposnor for this car.
Moe (SF, CA)
Jeff Gordon and the 24 team have been off setup wise most of the year. The same situation happened on Sunday. How can a road racer like Jeff Gordon finish 29th at Watkins Glen and run so bad at Infineon but finished 3rd due to the competiton taking each other out. Something is definitely wrong with the team and something needs to change right away. It's likely that he will win a race this year. Think Mr. Hendrick will make a crew chief change for Jeff?
Terry Blount (1:22 PM)
Jeff really likes Letarte and believes ion him. But in the end, the crew chief, like a head coach, usually takes the fall if a team doesn't live up to expectations. It all depends on how they do in th next three months.
thanks, then how many more chanches will chip give reed this year to do well
Terry Blount (1:24 PM)
You have to determine if the problem is the driver, the car, or both. In this case, no one is going to win in that car. But would someone else be better, and who could you get? That's the hard question you have to answer.
Seems like Jamie Mac is turning his season around....any thoughts?
Terry Blount (1:26 PM)
Things have improved the last three weeks, but I wouldn't say they turned things around just yet. I hope they do because Jamie is one of the real good guys in Cup.
What is up with Jr's performance lately? Do you think he will pick it up as the chase nears?
Terry Blount (1:28 PM)
A couple of pit strategy decision have hurt Earnhardt in the last three weeks, but now he's going back to Michigan, the place where he won earlier this year. I think the 88 team still is a contender for the title.
Don (Charlotte, NC)
I've been a JG fan since the late 80's and right now I'm worried. Latarte just doesn't seem to be able to give Jeff what he needs. I think Jeff drives a car completely different then a JJ or Jr, but being so far off on these RC's tells me there not getting it.There 6th place in the standings and the results are way better then they have been racing. How long will Hendrick let this slide? I think it's time to pay back Gordon and give him Knaus!
Terry Blount (1:30 PM)
Not gonna happen Don. I doubt any major changes are coming to the 24 this year. Things need to be pretty bleak before you rock the boat too much because you could make it worse. Right now, they are going to make the Chase and still could get hot when they need to.
Dennis (Alexandria< VA)
Ok, Terry. Lets say Mr. Hendrick has decided to replace Letarte as the #24 crew chief. Who will be his first pick? Thanks
Terry Blount (1:33 PM)
I would move Alan Gustafson from the 5 to the 24 if I was sure a change was necessary.
A different angle on Jeff Gordon. What are other drivers, crew chiefs, etc saying is wrong with the 24? Driver, Crew Chief, Car Chief. Is there rumors as to how they might try and fix the problem?
Terry Blount (1:35 PM)
Guys, the man is sixth in the standings. It's not like he's running 30th every week. It's not time to hit the panic button just yet.
Too bad Elliott Sadler wasn't getting good cars in the beginning of the season....he could've really made a run at the chase! He's scored the 10 most points in the last 10 races...
Terry Blount (1:37 PM)
Sadler has one top 10 in the last five races. He's been decent, but nothing to crow about.
Rick (Buffalo, NY)
I knew Rick Hendrick had very valid reasons for letting Kyle Busch go last year but a lot of people thought Mears should have been shown the door and now a year later he is gone, with Martin replacing him. Does Mr. H lose sleep at night thinking about giving up on kid who isn't even entering his prime yet and instead getting a year or two from Martin?
Terry Blount (1:38 PM)
Rick is fine with how it went down. He knew Kyle had enormous talent,. Everyone did. But he wasn't sure when Kyle would grow up.
David (Jackson, KY)
So, if McCumbee isn't etched in stone as Petty's 2nd full-time driver, who else is still in the running to be Bobby's teammate next year -- Riggs? Reutimann?
Terry Blount (1:40 PM)
Thos are two guys with a lot more Cup experience, and two guys who haven't had good equipment, so I would seriously consider them.
Jarrell, Houston, TX
Let's say Chip does not re-up Reed in the 41, will he be resorted to running full time in the Nationwide Series or will someone take a chance on him on the cup side
Terry Blount (1:41 PM)
The music is about to stop and not many chairs are left. I think Reed would be out of luck in Cup.
Why do so many people ask questions about Reed Sorensen? He's not good.
Terry Blount (1:41 PM)
Maybe this tells you why he has a ride in Cup.
Where do you think Denny hamlin stands with JGR? Do you think he'll be the forgotten man and eventually leave? It doesn't appear he gets the same amount of support as the other JGR drivers....
Terry Blount (1:44 PM)
He gets the same support as the other guys. Denny's season has been a little disappointing, but he's probably going to make the Chase. That's still a quality year, but it looks so-so in comparison to the remarkable season his teammate is having.
John, Covington GA
any reason we are not hearing anything on Newnan going to SHM? Is sponceership the holdup or does SHM have serious outher options as drivers. Persnoally I would like to see Riggs around 1 more year!
Terry Blount (1:45 PM)
Don't bet on that. The hold-up is just getting all the t's crossed and i's dotted. It's take a lot of legal paperwork to complete these deals.
Ben (Fayetteville, GA)
Reed is a good driver, just not on the right team. I think if a team like RCR or even Yates takes a chance on him then they would be very happy
Terry Blount (1:46 PM)
Wow, this really is the Reed Sorenson Fan Club Day on the chat. Glad to see he has so many supporters.
Mark (Mount Airy,MD)
Terry, will MWR(3 to 2) and DEI(4 to 3) run one less team next season due to lack of sponsorship?????
Terry Blount (1:47 PM)
Probably two for MWR, but DEI still believes it will find sponsorship for four.
Jeffy D (Feeding Hills MA)
Looking at the plan to fix the tires at Indy, I am not sure it was wise to wait until the weather was colder...wasn't heat one big factor in the problems there?
Terry Blount (1:48 PM)
No, it wasn't any hotter than any other year there, and cooler than some years. The problem is the groves in the track and how is affects the tires on the COT.
On Sunday when KB pulled out of the way to let Tony get his 5 points, do you think that was an order from the higher-ups at Joe Gibbs to help his teammate, or is Kyle really a nice kid who gets along great with and cares about his teammates but just gets a bad rap?
Terry Blount (1:49 PM)
Team orders, but Kyle had no problem with it.
TONY (KEIZER, OREGON)
morning Terry, i want to thank you for the info you gave me about a month ago about getting my son into racing,,,he starts next year and already has a sponsor,,,,,,also,,,,,,what do you think about rain tires,,,,i think they should use then in all series of racing, takes out the possibility of a rain shortened race?
Terry Blount (1:50 PM)
Glad he's doing well. I would like to see NASCAR consider rain tires fo a Cup road race, but I don't think it will happen any tme soon.
How soon until we have 10 4 car teams and 3 field fillers?
Terry Blount (1:51 PM)
We get closer to that every day.
Kvapil has had a good year, but why did Yates not ask Boris to get in that car for the road race?
Terry Blount (1:52 PM)
They did, but Boris felt it wasn't fair to a guy who has raced in every event this season. I applaud Boris for that.
Eric (Columbia, MO)
It seems that Carl Edwards might have what it takes to go up against Mr. Bush in the Chase, though losing credit for one of his wins (due to penalty) is a bitter pill to swallow. Does Carl have a legit shot at Kyle?
Terry Blount (1:54 PM)
Absolutely. Right now, Kyle would start with a 50-point lead on Carl. You can make that up in one race if Kyle had a bad finish.
That was a nasty wreck there at the end. That one of the hardest hits you've seen on a road course?
Terry Blount (1:56 PM)
Without question. It was scary. But I think it's another example of how safe the COT is, which was one of the big reasons for developing this car.
Patrick (Agawam, MA)
Is Boris a player in any full time seat, or is the die cast for him as he gets older?
Terry Blount (1:57 PM)
Age doesn't help him, but his popularity does help him. I know a lot of fans would love to see him get a full-time ride.
what is your favorite track to race at?
Terry Blount (1:59 PM)
Well I don't race on them. But my favorite track to watch a race in Bristol. My favorite track to go to is Texas becasue of all the amenities that go with it.
Is McDowell being out at Michigan by design or is he being punished for being, well stupid on Sunday?
Terry Blount (2:00 PM)
No punishment. They needed to put a vet like Skinner in the car to try to get back in the top 35.
John, Covington GA
Do you think the equipment at SHM will be better than Penske's?
Terry Blount (2:01 PM)
It isn't about the equipment. It's about the people who put together the equipment. I think Tony is going to hire some good people, but it will take time.
Terry Blount (2:02 PM)
I'm out folks. Have a great week. Peace.
