Beano Cook (3:02 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome. I am now on a streak of one win, hoping to extend it to two at the end of this chat. It is nice to see the end of the baseball season. Let's hope every playoff series go the minimum. Hopefully the World Series will end before December. Fire away.
Ret: (Fort Smith, AR)
How long before the Razorbacks are back in prominent bowl pictures? Will Bobby Patrino get us there? I think that once he gets more players for his system, it will only be a matter of time. If all goes well in recruiting, maybe 2 years?
Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
The problem with the Arkansas job is you are in the same division with Alabama, LSU and Auburn. It is going to be tough because the Tide appears to be back. Not all the way, but closer. Give Petrino some time, but it will not be easy. Plus playing some teams in the SEC East is not a cakewalk.
Name your top 3 current college football coaches?
Beano Cook (3:04 PM)
1-Urban Meyer of Florida. 2-Jim Grobe of Wake Forest. 3-Paul Johnson of Georgia Tech. How is that for a list...
Who is back contending for a National Title faster The Canes for the Noles?
Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
Tough question...a good one. I don't know. My guess is Miami. Tough to say. If I was Ed McMahon you would be getting a million dollars.
Eric (Tampa, FL)
Can Syracuse come back to power or have they fallen as far as SMU?
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
The Orange will not be like SMU, but it is unlikely Syracuse will come back to power. I know the AD feels differently.
Rick, Los Angeles
Is the Pac-10 a disappointment overall in your opinion? Oregon loses to Boise State, Arizona State wasn't really in it against Georgia.
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
This is not the year for the Pac-10, except of course for USC. If Oklahoma, USC and Florida all finish unbeaten, maybe the Trojans will get left out because of the way things have gone so far this season out west.
Scott (La Porte, IN)
What's up with Charlie Weis and ND? He's not getting the job done there.
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
Notre Dame is 2-1. I would say next year is the one he really has to compete for the national title. The Irish was not expected to compete for the national title by anyone this season.
Alex (Allentown, PA)
You mentioned Penn State as a team on the rise and a 2009 National Championship Contender. How do you believe this affects Joe Paterno's status considering he is in the last year of his contract? Does he decide when he leaves?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
I think he will be back next year, I did not think that two years ago, and predicted 2008 would be it a few years back. Penn State could make a run this year given the Big Ten. I feel Penn State or Wisconsin will win the Big Ten. I am not writing off Ohio State, I am just making a prediction. I can't pick every team.
Andre (Provo, UT)
If the planets and stars aligned in favor of BYU being the only 12-0 team at the end of the season how good would their chances be of playing in the National Championship game? Or is the hurdle just too big for any non-BCS team?
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
Unlikely. I give BYU credit, but first the Cougars have to go 12-0. There are a number of good teams in the conference. Imagine if BYU and Utah both ran the table going into their late-season meeting...wouldn't that be something. That's not impossible, folks.
Matt (Lexington, KY)
So Beano, my girlfriend asked me last week how Georgia could start at number 1 and not lose a game and now be ranked 3rd. I told her I didn't have an explanation, because there aren't any valid ones. Am I right or am I right?
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
You are right. First of all, it is good to have a girlfriend interested in college football; as long as she doesn't get too interested in baseball, keep dating her. If Georgia goes 13-0, the Bulldogs will clearly play for the national title.

So any word on NCAA troubles for Notre Dame after their supposedly accidentally bringing laptop to press box? Why do they need to cheat they already get everything handed to them. I bet they get away with this to.
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
They are not cheating. It was an accident from all indications.
Mark, Seattle WA
Beano, is being a college football sports analyst the easiest job in America? How many times do we hear the same thing said over and over ( change the name of the player and the team of course ). So and so has to have ball control, so and so can't turn it over, this team has to control the line of scrimage, that team has to play with attitude. It's the same thing week in and week out. We got it already! We know what players and teams have to do. Can't we get more analysts with some character and creativity? More Lou Holts I say! Down with the Herbstreets and Corsos!
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
I disagree with you. You are entitled to your opinion. Being an analyst is not always easy.
Andrew (Tuscaloosa, Alabama)
Any chance Bama pulls a Clemson-like upset again with everyone picking Georgia over Bama again?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
Alabama has a shot, of course. When you have three different weapons at running back, and the defense playing as well as it has, why not. I am not going to make a pick on this game, but it is the best contest of the weekend in college football.
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
Let me add this, UGA VII will be ready!
matthew (menifee Ca)
what do you think of boeckman getting benched for pryor? Am not a buckeye fan and believe boeckman all big ten player last year is the better QB. The oc wasnt for it seems
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
That is a decision Jim Tressel made. Pryor looked very good on Saturday, 66 yards rushing, four TD passes. That is impressive.
Mike (Dayton, Ohio)
Beano, What is your take on the current situation at West Point with the Army football team?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
In my opinion, it is kind of sad. I keep rooting for them. What else can I say. It is still impossible to get a ticket to the Army-Navy game.
Jason (Knoxville, TN)
Do you see Phil Fulmer being gone after this season?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
It is the SEC. The season isn't over yet but he could have problems. This is a big game at Auburn and the schedule is brutal. Alabama at home still, plus several tough road games like Georgia, Vandy and South Carolina.
TJ Oblong, Illinois
Do you think Illinois can became a consistent top 20 team?
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
No. Illinois will have good years when it is in the top 20. Through the years this program has not won as much as it should have.
Joe, Levittown, NY
Can Michigan make some noise this season despite the slow start?
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
We will find out this weekend. Michigan has the ability to beat Wisconsin. This is a very big game for the Badgers too.
Dave from Wheeling, WV
Beano: Do you think it is fair for the media and fans to be so critical of new WVU coach Bill Stewart just three weeks into the season? Some are already calling for his firing, it's disgusting from my point of view.
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
I think it is a little early. It is just three games. Maybe the fans got spoiled by the success under Rich Rodriguez. Let's wait and see what happens the rest of the season. In today's atmosphere, unless you win the national championship, you are a failure in the eyes of fans and talk show hosts.
Chris (Baton Rouge)
Why isnt LSU ranked number one? They are the defending champions!! and shouldnt they be at the top until someone knocks them off???. We all know that if USC or OSU would have won the title last year the voters would've had them ranked them #1.
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
You can make an argument for that. LSU won the national championship last year and it still unbeaten. I will tell you that if the Tigers go 13-0, they will play for the national title.
Blake (Abilene, TX)
Beano, The heisman should not have previus years performance as a factor. What is keeping Colt McCoy from beeing mentioned when his numbers are equal if not better than the ones being mentioned?
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
I agree. I don't go by last year's stats. There are a lot of games left. This is not a career award. If Texas beats Oklahoma and Missouri, McCoy will receive lots of attention.
Tell Chris LSU isn't number 1 anymore because half their players aren't there anymore...
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
That may be true but the ones taking over aren't taking biology.
When will we find out if the Spartans are for real?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
Michigan State has to go to Penn State and Michigan later in the season. Don't worry, we will find out. Remember the Spartans lost to California earlier.
Jerry (Atlanta, Ga)
Where?s the love for Les Miles? His win record at LSU equals Pete Carroll?s over the same time frame and everyone else falls behind. Guy has a NC in the bag and now looks to be contending for another. Top 10 recruiting classes, first round draft picks, championships, etc. OK, he wears his hat goofy but has amazing confidence in his players. How many NC?s he?s gotta bag to get some respect?
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
Les Miles has lots of love ... and lots of green too. What else would you want? He has certainly done a nice job there.
Scott (East Lansing, MI)
1. Pre-season polls are pointless. USC and Oklahoma look better than Georgia right now (not a slight). 2. Florida is not the best team in the SEC and won't go undefeated. 3. How do you expect ND to compete for a national title next year? They're not even good. Below average to national champions isn't happening. Care to explain?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
I don't care to explain. Notre Dame expects Notre Dame to compete for a national title...I did not say I believe that.
Aaron: (Arlington, TX)
BEANO!!! Do you think Texas Tech will go to a BCS bowl game this year?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
No. Too many candidates in the Big 12 between Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas. It will be tough. Is it possible, yes. Do I think will happen, no.
Jim (Cincinnati, OH)
Do you think Javon Ringer will have a chance at winning the Heisman even if the Spartans lose a few more games?
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
It will be tough for Ringer to win the Heisman if Michigan State odesn't run the table, which I don't think will happen.
How far away are the Huskers from getting back to a top team?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
We will find out the next three weeks-Virginia Tech, Missouri and Texas Tech all in a row. Bo Pellini can give all the speeches he wants, but these three games will be a barometer of how this program stands. Beating New Mexico State only goes so far.
Why have no Alabama players been considered for Heisman?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
This year? See me next year.
Matt (West Hartford, CT)
Are Donald Brown and the UConn Huskies ever going to get some repect?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
The 4-0 Huskies. Yeah, keep winning games. Wins over Temple, Baylor, Virginia and Hofstra ... hmm. Brown has been on fire, yes. By the way, that is not an impressive quartet.
Beano, is it true you were in World War I?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
Yes, and also the Civil War.
Do you see South Florida playing in a BCS bowl this year? and maybe even running the table with no ranked teams left on the schedule?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
South Florida probably will win the Big East, so yes I do. The Bulls can run the table, but I don't know if they will. It is September, let's talk about running the table in late October.
True or False. Fresno State would be the second best team in the Pac-10
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
That's a good one. You get four stars for that one.
Chris Waco, Tx
How do u see Baylor football going in the next few years with our new coach and electric Robert Griffin
Beano Cook (3:46 PM)
Art Briles did a good job at Houston and was a good hire, but it is nearly impossible for Baylor to win on a consistent basis in the Big 12. Griffin is certainly a very exciting quarterback to watch. I saw some of the Connecticut game as was impressed.
Beano- Is Mizzou here to stay as a legit top 20 team or is this 2 year ride about to come to a crashing end?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
With Chase Daniel, Jeremy Maclin and company, this program will compete for the Big 12 title this season. It is an offensive power with great balance. The Tigers can score running or passing. I like Gary Pinkel and he has done a great job.
Brandon (Gainesville, Ga)
Beano, can we get your top 5 Heisman picks?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
My top ones in no particular order: Sanchez, Tebow and Daniel. I know people will be screaming about several others. Relax, it is still September. We have a lot of Saturdays left.
Tim (Rhode Island)
What's with Wake Forest? I thought they were only good at basketball!
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
It is unbelievable what is going on down there. By the way, last year was rough for the basketball team. This is not an easy school to be successful at, but Jim Grobe has done an outstanding job. The win over Florida State for the third straight season was really a big statement to the success of the Demon Deacon program.
Ryan (Chicago, IL)
Not sure you answered Justin's question, I think he was asking whether they would be in the top 20 going forward during the Pinkel era...
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
Yes, I feel Pinkel has built a solid foundation.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Soup or sandwich today?
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
No, it is soup or salad.
Do you agree with Urban Meyer about the time rule and that college football is cheating the fans and players out of more plays?
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
I am not going to disagree with Meyer...he coaches. He has his opinion. I don't have an opinion on it yet because I have not crunched the numbers. When he says something like that, there is some merit to it.
Beano Cook (3:57 PM)
Time for the pick. I was right last week about Colorado upsetting West Virginia. I am 1-2 right now, nothing to brag about. I am not asking Congress for a $700 billion bailout. This is a strange pick and I hope I am right...Wyoming 27, Bowling Green 24. See you next week, thanks for joining me.
