Hery folks Beano will be here at the top of the hour. Keep sending your questions in!
Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
Good afternoon, I am on a hot streak, 1 straight. That leaves my record, I believe, at 1-5.
Shawn (Irvine, CA)
Is the LSU defense really overrated? Auburn hangs 21 on them (granted one TD was a pick 6), Miss St. puts up 24 (more points than all of their other losses combined), and Florida dumps 51 points on the reigning champs. Pretty fair to say their defense isnt what it was last year, and it isnt even as good as people have been saying this year... no?
Beano Cook (3:04 PM)
I do not go by one game, but you cannot ignore 51 points. Lets see what happens as the season progresses. If they beat Alabama, they will probably play for the SEC title.
How long do you think it's going to take Rodriguez to turn the Wolverines around?
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
I do not think he can do it until 2010, but no later than 2011. I do not think it will happen next year, but look at what has happened in Alabama, although the Tide were not getting embarrassed in the same way Michigan has this year.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Mr. Cook: I swore I heard you on ESPN Radio today say Penn State would play in the BCS title game. Did I hear you correctly?
Beano Cook (3:06 PM)
Chris (Fairmont, WV)
Beano, Do you think Notre Dame finishes 9-3 this year? thanks
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Before the season I thought that if they won two of the first three they would win 10. I did not expect UNC to be that good, but I do think they will go 9-3 and they will be favored in every game execept USC. The opponents are Washington, Pitt, Navy, BC, and Syracuse...out of those five Notre Dame was probably interested in a total of five of their players. Notre Dame has everything going for them with a network that is nothing but an informercial for them, it is unbelievable that they have not won a National title since 1988.
John Shafer: Charleston, SC
As an alum and a fan of UGA, I must say that I love that few people are talking about us being in the title hunt right now. We play better with a chip on our shoulder, and I encourage everyone in the media to keep on assuming UF is leaving the SEC East.
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
Well when the season began I said it was impossible for them to go undefeated with that schedule, they have the toughest schedule in the SEC. If they finish 12-1 I think they could be playing for a national title. UGA still has to go to LSU and play Auburn and Florida, they would be better off playing in the AFC North right now.
Is there any chance BYU makes it to the National Championship Game?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
No. Very unlikely.
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
However, I think that conference should get an automatic bid to a BCS game.
Steve (Heshey PA)
Beano - Joe goes, if Penn State wins it all this year?
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
I think a lot depends on his health. If Joe feels like he can physically do the job he will be back. Penn State will be better next year than they are this year. Penn State's football program makes up for the fact that Penn State does not have a men's basketball program.
Kim (Louisville, KY)
Beano, I hear you predicted an Alabama-PSU national championship for 2009...do do you think your chances are of being right a year early? I love the idea of an old-school NC matchup!
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
Well No. 1 let me say that my pick for 2009 can be changed. But at that moment I went with those teams. Next year Alabama's shcedule is more favorable and Penn State plays in a conference that is not that strong and their non-conference is ludicrous. But yes, it could happen this year.
Jaocb ((Columbus, Ohio))
Can the Bcukeyes beat Penn State this year?
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
They can but they won't. I actually think Ohio State will lose on Saturday.
Kory (Denver, CO)
Would OSU have a better chance beating PSU with Boeckman over Pryor at QB?
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
You would have to ask Tressel that. I am not sure, to be honest. I think the only advantage OSU has over Penn State is the location of the game. The only two teams, in my opinion, that are better than Penn State are Florida and USC and maybe Texas. I do not think Alabama is one of those teams.
Beano, Will Auburn fire Tommy Tuberville?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
I would have said no two days ago, but from what I hear he could be in trouble, which I think is unfair. It is obvious that Alabama is going to dominate Auburn in the next couple years.
Joe B (Knoxville)
Is this Phil Fulmer's last year at Tennessee?
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
Well we learned with the firing of Tommy Bowden that contracts mean little. I think Tennessee fans are impatient and the mascot is upset, and the Vols are losing games. If I had to make a prediction I would say Fulmer returns, and probably rightfully so.
Brad (Elgin, Texas)
Do you think Texas will beat Mizzo ?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
Mizzou is a very small underdog, but you go with the home team. But I do not see how Texas can go undefeated with their schedule.
I heard you tell Colin Cowherd you like Michigan State over Ohio State on Saturday. What makes you so confident this team is ready to finally beat a national program foe?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
Well I am not confident, but my job is to make predictions and people want us to be wrong. I think MSU will win because they are playing at home and OSU has problems on offense. Now if the Buckeyes win it won't shock me, but I like the upset here. But I do not think MSU will beat Penn state.
Is Washington going to be competitive in a game this season? I've given up on them actually winning one...
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
These are dog days in Washington. The Seahawks are in trouble, the Mariners sunk like the Titanic, and Sonics left and Washington State is losing by triple digits, and no bail out can help Washington football. But the Huskies will be back in the future.
Cosmo (Anytown, USA)
Do the Phillies close out the Dodgers tonight? As a Phillies fan and considering your record this year, please say 'no'.
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Thanks for the confidence! I look for the Dodgers to win it tonight. It looks like it is going to be the Phillies and Rays in the World Series, though. Philadelphia is a great sports town and in many ways they deserve a World Series.
Does UConn still have a shot to win the big east this year?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Yes, they have a very good shot.
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
The Big East is still the weakest conference. And let me say it again, BC made a bad move in leaving the Big East.
When will the big tens prestige that it used to have be back?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
The Big Ten will never be as good as the SEC or Big 12, except on rare occasions. Right now they are the third toughest conference in the country, since the Pac-10 is a mess. It is a good conference, but it is not at the same level as the SEC or Big 12.
Mark (Appleton, WI)
Should Baylor get out of the Big12 and if so where should they go to be competitive again?
Beano Cook (3:35 PM)
Well Baylor is the only provate school in that conference and in football will probably never be competitive on a steady basis. I do not have an answer to their problem. They can compete in the Big 12 in other sports, but football...forget it. They should probably be in the Mounatin West, but politics forced the Big 12 to take Baylor.
Austin (Draper, Ut )
Is BYU going to be a highly ranked for years to come? Or is it just for this year? Utah?
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
BYU has good teams. I do not know if this is an exception, but I guess if BYU and Utah are both undefeated in November there is a good chance GameDay will be there.
Todd Ressing (Lawrence, KS)
What are Kansas' chances this week at OU? I'm optomistic after the lack of confidence the OU defense may now have after last week. Although, I'm realistic given the fact that OU will be at home...on homecoming.
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
If they were going to play basketball on Saturday, you would have a chance. I have to be honest, I have no interest in who wins, I like Kansas, as their coach is from Western PA, but Oklahoma still has an outside chance to play for the Big 12 title, but with Texas' tough schedule it may happen.
Will Hawaii ever contend to win the WAC again or was last year a once in a lifetime moment?
Beano Cook (3:39 PM)
I would think Hawaii from time to time could win the title. But it will not be easy.
How does LSU do this weekend?
Beano Cook (3:41 PM)
LSu still has a shot to play for the conference title as well. They have to beat Alabama and not lose another conference game. So I think they have a good shot against South Carolina, but a game against Spurrier is never easy, especially at home. I would not be shocked if the Gamecocks won.
Steve (Oklahoma City)
What team now presents the biggest obstacle of Texas going undefeated?
Beano Cook (3:43 PM)
The road games so Texas Tech will be a difficult game, and Kansas. If Texas goes undefeated than they will have really earned that No. 1 ranking. That is one tough road.
Do you think Boise State will make a BCS Game this year?
Beano Cook (3:44 PM)
If they finished undefeated they get a shot. There are 4 wild card teams for BCS bids and one will definitely come from the Big 12 and I think if either BYU or Utah goes undefeated they will get one..after that I do not know. If Notre Dame had beaten UNC, Notre Dame could have been one.
Leo (Cedar City, UT)
If Alabama, Texas, and Penn State remain undefeated (I know this is almost impossible but work with me) who plays in the championship game?
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
Texas and Alabama. Easy answer.
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
But it will not happen. either Texas or Alabama will lose a game.
Austin (Birmingham, Alabama)
Is there a chance that Alabama could win out the regular season but loose the SEC champioinship and still play for the national title?
Beano Cook (3:48 PM)
Possible, but very unlikely. Especially if the team that beats them is Florida. If Florida has one loss, but Florida beats a previouslt undefeated Alabama for the SEC title, then they have no shot. Alabama would then become a wild card team for a BCS game.
Terry ( Norman, Okla.)
Beano, if Texas goes undefeated and then both Alabama and Penn St. lose 1 game and say OU and USC do not lose again, who would play Texas?
Beano Cook (3:49 PM)
Will VT be the ACC champion at the end of the season?
Beano Cook (3:50 PM)
Good chance. They have a great chance. A win over BC is important. But they have a god shot. Wake Forest and Gerogia Tech are there too. I think it is wide open right now. And I cannot forget UNC.
Why do you think Ohio State's offense struggle so much agianst Purdue?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
I'm not sure. I think the offense is a big problem right now. I think Ohio State may have been playing a little safe, not showing everything. But they better show something Saturday or they will lose.
Jon (Woodland Hills, CA)
Was the SEC a bit over-hyped this year? It seems there is a good chance not one school has less than two losses by the end of the season.
Beano Cook (3:53 PM)
I think maybe the toughest conference this year is the Big 12, but over a five year period the SEC has been the toughest. I do not think they are over hyped.
Clay (Oakland, CA)
Instead of looking at BYU's BCS hopes if they go undefeated, how about we just talk about tomorrow's game? Can TCU pull off the upset? Home dog, under the lights, national tv, great defense...I smell upset.
Beano Cook (3:54 PM)
Yes. TCU is good. You make some very good points. that is a very good game tomorrow. The people who schedule the Thursday night games should be in charge of the bailout in Washington. The Thursday night games have become great.
Heather (Austin, TX)
As far as the BCS is concerned is the BIG 12 its own worst enemy?
Beano Cook (3:55 PM)
Yes, as is the SEC. The Big Ten has the right solution. Play eight conferecne games and have the big teams play easy non-conferences. The Big Ten will get teams into the BCS title game. They have outsmarted the other conferences.
Beano Cook (3:57 PM)
Actually my record is not 1-5, it's 2-4. I still stink, but a little less. Maryland 31, Wake Forest 20. Thanks for your time, we will see you next week a 3 p.m. ET.
