Beano is here!
Beano Cook (3:01 PM)
Good afternoon. I am sorry I picked the wrong tam with LSU. I am 5-5 and I hope to improve it to 6-5 at the end of the chat. Ready for your questions!
John (Boston, MA)
Hi Beano, What are the odds that next Saturday's Michigan St/Penn St game is the last game Joe Paterno ever coaches at Beaver Stadium?
Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
People seem to think it is going to happen, but if his health is not a problem, I think he will return. Now two years ago I thought he would coach two more years. But now, unless he has health problems, I think he is going to return.
Jon (st. louis)
Could it be beneficial for the Big 10 if they scheduled home games against the SEC, Texas, and Southern Cals during the end of the season? Have those teams come play up north during the rougher weather.
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
Well the Big Ten do not want to play that many tough non-conference games. One tough game out of four is enough. Also, the majority of Big Ten coaches do not want to play non-conference games period. The Big Ten wants to get into the title game, but do it the easy way. The Big Ten title next year will be decided when Ohio State plays Penn State at Penn State.
can u explain to me why LSU is still ranked? and who did they beat that they derserve to be ranked every week? on the other hand, Ore St, beats #6 USC, and lose to #7 Utah, and # 8 Penn St, and Standford just ranked last week??? i know SEC is good, but this is just not fair!!!
Beano Cook (3:07 PM)
Well as JFK said, life in unfair. You are right, but that is the way it is and that is how the voting goes. No one beleives in the Beavers despite their good season. Oregon St. lost to undefeated Utah and one-loss Penn State and both happened on the road. You are right, they should be ranked higher than they are.
Bradford (Boise, ID)
Beano, Does Boise State get selected for an at-large BCS bid over Ohio State?
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
I do not know if they will get it before Ohio State, but if they remain undefeated they will get a BCS bid, as will Utah if they stay undefeated. If it comes down to Boise State and Ohio State I think Boise State should get it.
If Penn State wins out they go to the Rose Bowl no matter what right? I am confused...
Beano Cook (3:10 PM)
If Penn State wins these last two games, they will be in the Rose Bowl. If they lose to Michigan State and Ohio State wins their next two games, Ohio State goes. There is a chance Penn State will play Oregon State in the Rose Bowl. And game that will attrack 15 people, outside of the states of Pennsylvania and Oregon.
Noonan (Philly, PA)
Notre Dame has recruited very well in recent years, but still can't beat winning teams. It's maddening to Irish fans. Even with mediocre coaching you'd figure they'd beat a decent team every once in a while. What's wrong with the Irish?
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
There is something wrong, and I do not know what it is. If they lose to Navy, they will probably be 6-6, which is an absolute disgrace. Take the following games. They lost to Pitt, Pitt probably have 4 player Notre Dame looked at in high school. Boston College may have four players Notre Dame looked at. Look at the jobs Nick Saban and Butch Davis have done in two seasons. Now Alabama's material can match Notre Dame's, but not UNC's. Next year is a big year for coach Weis. He is going to have to win 9 or 10 games.
Joe (San Diego, CA)
Beano, Do you think Bo Pelini is the right fit for Nebraska? Is he there for the long run?
Beano Cook (3:17 PM)
I think he is. Nebraska is playing better than last year. That was an important win over Kansas. Nebraska is in the easier division, but it is a lot tougher than it was 15 years ago. Why would he leave? It's a good job.
Beano! Tech at OU. Who ya got? Also, do you think Mike Leach will jump ship and head elsewhere?
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
No. 1 I think OU will win because the game is in Norman. My guess is if the right offer comes to Leach, he will take it. He knows OU and Texas will usually have more material than he will and that would be the reason for the departure.. But if Tech is smart they will give him a really big contract.
Al (Dallas, TX)
Beano, Do you think Michael Crabtree goes pro after this season?
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
He will be a first-round pick, and if he is projected as that he should probably go. He is fantastic.
Ryan (Dallas, Tx)
Is there a reason Alabama is #1 over Texas Tech? If you look at there schedules, Texas techs looks a lot more impressive than Alabama's. Tech beat #1 Texas and destroyed #9 OkSt Bama beat... barely, #16 LSU, beat an overrated Georgia team, a highly overrated Clemson team. Is this a situation where the computers got it right, and not the humans?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
Alabama won tough games on the road, while Texas Tech has not. Both Tech's big wins happened in Lubbock. If Tech wins at OU, and I were voting, as I once did, then I would vote Texas Tech No. 1. But your argument is justified. You can make that case. But it does not matter right now. As long as you are No. 2 you will be playing for the national title.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Mr. Cook: Is there a Big East team out there that you truly believe deserves to play in a BCS bowl game?
Beano Cook (3:25 PM)
Well the Big East is part of the BCS, althought they are the weakest coinference, but the winner goes to a BCS bowl. But it is the weakest conference. If you are going to take that observation, there are three teams in the Big 12, which should be in the BCS bowl before the winner of the Big East. Texas Tech, Texas and Oklahoma are all better than the best team in the Big East.
Ryan (Dallas, Tx)
Do you agree with the limit of 2 teams per confrence in the BCS games? Doesnt really seem fair all of a sudden with the Big 12 and SEC having 3 contenders, and confrences like the ACC and Big east who have no one in the top 15.
Beano Cook (3:28 PM)
I believe in limiting the number of teams that get BCS invites. You do not want to get into a baseball-type situation and have the same team get the money. I like the two-team limit. You have to have competition. You have to be somewhat of a socialist and spread it around. I do not believe that in politics, but I believe it in sports. The problem in baseball is that there is no balance.
Beano, in the event of a three way tie in the Big 12 South (with Oklahoma winning a close one over Tech), who do you think DESERVES to represent the south and go to the championship?
Beano Cook (3:30 PM)
That is a tough one. My guess is Texas. I would say at this stage Texas, because they beat OU on a neutral field, and Tech beat Texas at Lubbock, and OU would have beaten Tech in Norman. So I will go with Texas, but that is just my opinion.
Who's the heisman frontrunner right now?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
Graham Harrell, Texas Tech QB. I do not think there is any doubt that he is the leader, right now.
Bryan (Huntsville, AL)
Do you think Butch Davis is a good fit for the Vols?
Beano Cook (3:32 PM)
Tony Barnhart, on CBS, said that there is no chance that Davis is interested and tony has great sources. I will go with what he had to say. I think Butch would be better of at UNC, instead off Tennessee.
Jimmy (Champaign, IL)
Other than Notre Dame, which team would the Big Ten most likely want to turn their conference into a 12-team conference?
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
Well if I were the Big Ten, and I do not think they would get them, I would try Mizzou. I think Mizzou has more in common with schools from the Big Ten than schools from the Big 12. The second coming will happen before Notre Dame joins the Big Ten.
Beano Cook (3:34 PM)
But the Big Ten is doing well for itself overall. It is a well run conference, with a great commisioner. I just disagree with some of their policies.
Who will win the SEC?
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
If I had to bet, Floirda. I think the Gators would beat Alabama. But I would not be shocked if the Tide won. With Nick Saban, they have a great shot.
Mike (Fayetteville, TN)
If not Davis, who do you think the Vols will hire as head coach?
Beano Cook (3:38 PM)
My prediction was Jim Grobe from Wake Forest. I think he would be a very good choice. He made Wake competitive. That is like making the Swiss Army a competitor for world supremacy.
What percent chance do you give Texas Tech winning against OU?
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
2 out of 7.
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
Texas Tech may win this game. Oklahoma has lost games at home before. Texas Tech is the type of team that a lot of people will be rooting for since they have never been there before. I would love to see Tech play for the national title, because it is not going to happen that much.
Mike (Memphis, TN
If OU beats and Bradfor has a big game does he become the front runner for the Heisman?
Beano Cook (3:42 PM)
He is in there, definitely. Everyone is counting out Tebow, and I have not. I think the Heisman is down to the QBs from Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Florida. The fact that Tebow won last year does not influence my vote, but it may influence others. But in my opinion, one year has nothing to do with the other.
Dominique (Milwaukee, WI
do you think USC has a shot a going to the BCS title game
Beano Cook (3:45 PM)
They have a shot, but they are in sixth place and need help. Alabama plays Floirda, and someone loses there, so they move up there. Someone has to lose between OU and Tech, so that moves them up another notch. So can they pick up two more spots? Maybe. Look at how crazy last year was, when Pitt upset West Virginia. USC is not out of it.
Answer one from Across the Pond! What did you think of Ohio State's fake punt on Saturday--up 31-10 with 9 minutes left. Also, Elane Benes went to Tufts, not Northwestern.
Beano Cook (3:47 PM)
Classless. Against Michigan, that is one thing. Against Northwestern, that is classless. Why? Why would you do that? And I am a Tressel fan. I would expect that from certain coaches but not a guy like Tressel.
Casey (Santa Clarita CA)
Beano I know it is difficult to see your friend Joe Paterno lose but don't you think that the NC will be a better game with the Big 12 and SEC champion in there?
Beano Cook (3:51 PM)
If you have USC, the Big 12 champ or the SEC champ, two of those three get in and you have a great title game.
David (Annapolis, MD)
Not too much buzz here in Annapolis for the Navy game yet. Do they have much of a chance against ND?
Beano Cook (3:52 PM)
Navy is only a 3 point dog. Absolutely they have a chance.
Ryan (Atlanta, GA)
Will GT end up playing in a descent bowl despite the ACC title slipping away? Which bowl do think?
Beano Cook (3:55 PM)
I think they will make a decent bowl. But I have no idea who is going to win the ACC. The ACC has the best title race.
What team has a better offense, Oklahoma or Texas Tech?
Beano Cook (3:56 PM)
I think OU can run the ball a little better than Tech. And then it goes without saying that Tech has a great air attack.
Beano Cook (3:58 PM)
So we stand at 5-5. This week, it's just a hunch, but I like Maryland 31 UNC 24. See you next week at 3 p.m. ET time.
