Beano will be here shortly!
Beano Cook (5:28 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome to the last college football chat of 2008. Of course I will be back in my usual time slot at 3 pm ET next Wednesday to look more closely at the national championship game. For those who are in the east, I hope you are surviving the snowy weather. Fire away...
Beano Cook (5:29 PM)
I want to apologize I was tied up for a half hour...my fault. I am ready, better late than never. I was on ESPNEWS a little earlier.
Eric (Venice, CA)
Hi Beano, Why does Bob Stoops get such a pass on losing 4 BCS games in a row? All we heard about was Ohio St. but OU has been even worse in BCS games yet they get the benifit of the doubt for the NC Game? They even lost to Texas. I just do not get it. Thanks.
Beano Cook (5:30 PM)
He is not getting a pass in Oklahoma. It may not be big news all over the country but it is big news there. He gets heat there and if he doesn't beat Florida he will get a lot more heat.
Glenn, South Bend
After the performance of Jimmy Clausen in Hawaii, do you think people will look at Notre Dame as a ranked team next season? I like Floyd at WR a lot.
Beano Cook (5:32 PM)
They should always be ranked based on material. I thought the Irish would win nine games last season and obviously I was wrong. Next year the schedule is not that tough. Notre Dame is easing up on its schedule with hopes of winning a national title. Hard to believe it has been 20 years since the last one.
Come On Beano!!
Which bowl game has been the biggest surprise to you so far?
Beano Cook (5:33 PM)
The way Oregon easily dismantled Oklahoma State in the second half and a terrible showing by Wisconsin against Florida State.
Is Shonn Greene the best story in college football?
Beano Cook (5:34 PM)
He is a good story but I don't know that I would go that far to say the best. Paterno would be right up there.
Are there too many bowl games?
Beano Cook (5:34 PM)
Every year I get that question. The answer is supply and demand. If the people go, then there aren't too many bowl games.
Clippers vs. Thunder...are you going?
Beano Cook (5:35 PM)
I can't get tickets. Apparently it is a sellout. I thought it was Warriors-Thunder tonight. Even the scalpers couldn't help me.
Tom (Carroll, Iowa)
Are you sick of watching Chase Daniel's family? I've never seen a family be on camera anymore than they were at the Alamo Bowl.
Beano Cook (5:36 PM)
Brady Quinn's sister, AJ Hawk's girlfriend got a lot of airtime and that could compete. Emotion of TV, showing their reactions. They were on a lot.
With the way the bowls have played out and PAC 10 winning some big games were the early observations of the confrence being weak wrong or does it all come down to the Rose Bowl
Beano Cook (5:38 PM)
It may be wrong. Arizona beat BYU, Oregon over Oklahoma State. It is not just the Rose Bowl, and that is big. California beat Miami. It has been a good start for the Pac-10 in bowl season, you are right.
Rich, Montclair, NJ
Will Paterno coaching from the booth hurt Penn State against USC?
Beano Cook (5:39 PM)
No I don't think it would hurt. I think he would rather be on the field. He has been in the booth several times. There is some anticipation surrounding this game, I am looking forward to it.
Tim, New Jersey
What did you think of Rutgers turning around its season and playing well in the bowl win?
Beano Cook (5:39 PM)
It is a good start for next season, Schiano is a good coach, I like him, and I give the quarterback Teel a lot of credit for the way he finished up.
Beano, you talked on your podcast about undeserving Heismans...How about Tim Crouch over Rex Grossman? Could there be a worse travesty?
Beano Cook (5:41 PM)
Number one, I never said undeserving. I would never say that about a Heisman winner. I was surprised by some of the picks. Just because I didn't vote for the winner doesn't mean the guy who gets the trophy is undeserving. I voted for Tebow but certainly Sam Bradford was deserving as well. I understand what you are saying, but undeserving is not the right word.
John, Omaha Nebraska
Hope you can avoid the bad weather too Beano. Any thoughts on the clem / neb game? Seems like teams with a running QB have hurt NU the most. Teams that run have been bo's specialty. I think this game is taylor made for a NU win. How about you? Have a Great New Year!
Beano Cook (5:42 PM)
I think the Gator Bowl is a very good attraction. To be honest, I don't have a prediction on that one.
Beano, Happy New Year. Preview the big time matchup between Quan Cosby and Malcolm Jenkins. I expect it to be on of the marquee matchups of any bowl game... agree?
Beano Cook (5:44 PM)
The big question with Texas is, will the players be sulking over Oklahoma playing for the national title. If both teams play to the best of their ability, Texas will win. The fans at the Fiesta Bowl will get to see the dotting of the I. The Cosby-Jenkins battle is just one element of this game. Will Pryor and Boeckmann be on the field together? Can Texas slow down Beanie Wells.
Richard (Tucson, AZ)
You hear all this talk about so many teams deserving to play in the NC game and that we need a playoff. I know you're in favor of a plus one. But shouldn't these great teams play better OOC games against other great teams to really make a statement. That way the best teams would dwindle down as the season progresses. USC and Oklahoma (besides Chattanooga and who knew Washington would be as it was)have good OOC opponents. A team like Texas Tech has a joke of a OOC schedule. Don't claim to be the best if you don't want to play the best.
Beano Cook (5:46 PM)
I have been saying that for years. The big crime this year is non-conference joke schedules when they have a lot of material, Florida State, USC and UCLA seem willing to play anyone but they are in the minority. Alabama, Penn State and Ohio State (I know they played USC but look at the other non-conference games) should be playing tougher non-league games.
Ricky Sixx, Miami
Do you think the Hurricanes will be a top 10 team in the next few years?
Beano Cook (5:47 PM)
I don't think they will next year. We will see in 2010 when they have Ohio State on the schedule.
Do you think Brett Bielema will be fighting for his job next season? The Badgers have been getting worse each year further removed from the Alvarez era.
Beano Cook (5:48 PM)
Yes, I think he is one coach who will be on the hot seat next season. The number one coach in that position in 2009 will be Charlie Weis.
How long does Wanny last at Pit? Can't win a thing!!! All of the talent he has and he hasn't won a championship and just lost 3-0 in the Sun Bowl, Brutal!!!
Beano Cook (5:49 PM)
Pittsburgh did win nine games this season and if McCoy comes back, the team will be very good next year.
Sorry our game is only a good attraction. Arent you supposed to have an opinion. If not why are you on the chat? How about doing your job! Clemson Rules Beano chokes.
Beano Cook (5:50 PM)
I don't have to have an opinion on every game. I think USC will beat Penn State, Texas will beat Ohio State. Outside of Clemson and Nebraska fans, and obviously you are one, I am not so sure there is a lot of interest in that game, though I am planning to watch it.
Can I party with you tonight?
Beano Cook (5:51 PM)
At my age, you will be going home early. Besides, North Carolina vs. Nevada hoops is on TV.
Beano - there is a banner on the chat page saying "You Know Us. And We Know Sports". How can you have no opinion of the Clemson game. We were a top 10 team. NU hasnt been ranked all year. Wake up and start paying attention. Isnt that your job? Wish I could get by by not doing mine. Typical ESPN hatred of the orange & purple.
Beano Cook (5:52 PM)
There is no hatred of Clemson, period. One of my ambitions before I die is to touch the rock.
Is there a college head coach that should be a cnadidate for one of those NFL openings?
Beano Cook (5:53 PM)
Kirk Ferentz might have been a possibility for Cleveland at one time. Anyone making a good living in college should stay there...too many egomaniacs in the pros. There are some good owners but a lot of bad ones you would not want to work for. Pete Carroll, but he is not leaving USC.
Beano, I see your point with OOC. But, if millions depended on it and you were the AD. Are you saying you'd rather play USC than say App St.? Or are you merely saying schedule TCU instead of North Texas?
Beano Cook (5:54 PM)
I am making a statement. I am not an AD, I am a fan. I also understand a lot of smaller schools need the guarantee money for their programs. It is called rent a victim.
Do you like the hiring of Monte Kiffin in Tennessee?
Beano Cook (5:57 PM)
It is hard to say. Here is a guy who has been in the NFL for so many years, you don't know how the kids will react to him. I don't understand the hiring of Lane Kiffin as head coach. Tennessee figures this is the way to go and they are closer to this situation than I am.
Kevin (Portland, OR)
Florida and Oklahoma deserve to be in the NC game with how they ended the season. But do you believe that they are the two best teams in the country? I think it is Florida and USC.
Beano Cook (5:58 PM)
You may be right, but USC lost to Oregon State. If you had a tournament and Vegas made the line, USC would be favored. It isn't the way it is done. Oklahoma played in a tougher conference and played six teams that won nine or more games.
DK Tigard, Oregon
Alright Beano-baby Oklahoma or Florida?
Beano Cook (5:59 PM)
I will give my pick at my regular time, 3 pm ET next Wednesday. Building up the drama!
With June Jones at the helm, will SMU revive its once powerful program?
Beano Cook (6:00 PM)
It is going to take time and it is unlikely that SMU will be in the national picture again. In a way it is sad.
Is Steve Kragthorpe's job in jeopardy?
Beano Cook (6:01 PM)
He will be on the hot seat in 2009.
Don (Chino Hills, CA)
Oregon State just beat Pitt to make the PAC 10 4-0 in bowls, assuming USC wins tomorrow, does the PAC 10 finally earn some love?
Beano Cook (6:02 PM)
Yes, the Pac-10 earns some love this bowl season.
Tom (Carroll, Iowa)
How many days until pitchers and catchers report?
Beano Cook (6:02 PM)
I am counting the hours. I can't wait.
Beano Cook (6:03 PM)
The Yankees have spent more money on the salaries three players than Obama's stimulus bill we run.
Johnnie (Greensboro, NC)
During the PapaJohns.com bowl, why wasn't the Rutgers placeholder not ruled down in the first quarter on the successful fake field goal when his knee was obviously on the ground when he received the snap? I realize NC State fell apart in the second half, but that 6 points ended up being the difference in the end.
Beano Cook (6:04 PM)
Because you can have a knee on the ground in that position.
While Missouri and OSU are probably the 4th and 5th best teams in the Big 12, are we starting to learn now that the offenses may not be so great and the defenses are really bad?
Beano Cook (6:05 PM)
You may be right. The thing about the Big 12, they had so many good quarterbacks. I can't remember a league having as many good signal-callers at one time.
More successful tonight: Tech's triple O or LSU d? Who wins the game?
Beano Cook (6:06 PM)
I am looking forward to this one. I think Paul Johnson is one of the best coaches in the country and I feel this is one of the more intriguing bowl games. I like Georgia Tech to win.
Pitchers and catchers report for spring training on Feb. 14.
Beano Cook (6:06 PM)
Oh, I can't wait. What a perfect Valentine's Day gift! My heart will flutter.
Beano, with the NFL not putting salary caps on rookies until another couple years, do you think stafford and Moreno will take that in consideration and stay one more year at Georgia?
Beano Cook (6:08 PM)
I think that could be a factor in the decision-making process. That is a very good observation.
Now with Andre Smith out of the game the Alabama 0-line on the left side is under 300 pounds each. Do you think they can still contain Utah's Paul Kruger with out a double team?
Beano Cook (6:09 PM)
That will be a challenge. The loss of Smith is a big blow to a team that runs the ball so well. I felt Utah was going to make it interesting anyway, but I said that about Hawaii too last year. They left Steve McGarrett at home.
Dan (Leslie, ND)
If the Sooners-Gators matchup turns out poor, what is the likelihood that a huge Texas or USC win will grant the victor the 1st place AP vote?
Beano Cook (6:11 PM)
I don't see that happening. I think the winner of Oklahoma-Florida will be number one, period.
Is Bill Lynch on the hot seat?
Beano Cook (6:13 PM)
If he is, he should not be. Indiana in football is like the Pirates and Royals in baseball, it is tough to be a consistent winner. Alumni have to be realistic and in most cases they are not. Plus Lynch took over in a very difficult situation.
Hello Beano. Are you at the studio or are you at home? I just can't picture you with a computer and Internet access at home.
Beano Cook (6:13 PM)
You know me well.
What do you think about the Pro Bowl being scheduled before the Super Bowl in 2010?
Beano Cook (6:14 PM)
I think it is a great idea. The Pro Bowl used to be great and now nobody cares. People see these players all year long, so it doesn't mean much.
Thanks for the great chats this year Beano. I really appreciate you answering my questions. Happy New Year to you and your family. Be well!!!
Beano Cook (6:15 PM)
I just want to wish everyone a Happy New Year, stay safe on the roads. May your favorite teams win, and if not, let them cover. See you next week at 3 pm ET and I promise I will be there on time.
