Matt will be here shortly, everyone!
Matthew Barnaby (3:34 PM)
Excited to be here!
Omar Little (Baltimore, MD)
Do my Caps have enough to make it happen this year Matthew? A bit worried about our D but I think we have enough firepower to go far if Theodore is on
Matthew Barnaby (3:35 PM)
Your team is going to be great for a lot of years to come. I'm still not sold on the goaltending, but besides Boston, they are as good as anyone in the East. With Ovechkin on your side, anything could happen.
Derek Lutz (Grand Lakes)
What's up with the Wings Matthew? A tough stretch or something more. D looks a bit scary right now, even giving up constant leads against Phoenix last night
Matthew Barnaby (3:37 PM)
They score a lot of goals, but they're suddenly giving up more shots than usual. I think they have a serious goaltending issue, and for the first time, think they need to look at what's out on the market if they are going to return and hoist the Stanley Cup.
After watching the Devils/Caps game it has come to my attention that despite the Devils success they still need a go to blue liner. Any word that the Devils are going to fill that "void"?
Matthew Barnaby (3:39 PM)
I think Lou, like everyone else, is trying to improve his team. D are so hard to come by this time of year. For the most part, they have played very well with the defensive lapses they have had, Clemmensen has come up big. I don't foresee any big changes.
George Peterson (Chicago)
Matthew who is your rookie of the year right now?
Matthew Barnaby (3:40 PM)
I'm gonna go with Steve Mason. He has put the Columbus Blue Jackets in a position that they have never been--contending for the Stanley Cup playoffs. As a rookie, he is playing the most pressure position, and for most nights, he has been their best player.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Do you think the Penguins can make a push and squeak into the playoffs?
Matthew Barnaby (3:41 PM)
I definitely do. They are certainly not the same team as last year. They have overcome a lot of injuries, but their power play is going to have to improve from 23rd in the league if they are going to make that push. Goaltending has to be better than it has. It looks like Fleury is struggling with confidence. There will be no Stanley Cup Final for them.
Boss (River Deli)
Matthew loving the play of my Flames right now. Is there enough there to challenge the Sharks and Wings when all the chips are on the table?
Matthew Barnaby (3:43 PM)
In the West, I consider San Jose and Detroit as definite front-runners. Calgary played in San Jose a few weeks ago and threw everything they had at them. That is the only way to play these teams. They need to add either a top-6 forward or a puck-moving D at the deadline to have a chance.
Benji - New York, NY
Which team do you think will be making the biggest splash before the trade deadline? And who is going to be the big surprise move of the season (like Huet was last year)?
Matthew Barnaby (3:44 PM)
I think it will be Montreal. It's the Canadiens' hundredth anniversary and the owner has been pressuring management to make a move. They have been in conversations for Gaborik and Lecavalier. With the loss of Lang and a terrible power play, these are two things they will try to address at the deadline.
Tricie (Cleveland, Oh)
What team is most likely to win it all?
Matthew Barnaby (3:45 PM)
I picked Detroit at the start of the year, but watching San Jose and Boston play consistently, they are the two best teams in the NHL. Stay tuned.
Mr. Burns (Merrick, NY)
Will the Canucks step it up and finally start to hit their stride Matthew?Luongo still looks rusty and teams are obviously trying to get him moving side to side as much as possible.
Matthew Barnaby (3:47 PM)
Things can't get any worse in Vancouver. It takes time to come back from an injury like Luongo had when on the top of his game. I think he's the best goalie in the NHL. Look for Sundin to play better, as he has just finished his training camp. The Canucks will make the playoffs.
A nice comeback recently by the Stars to get into the playoff mix, do you think they'd take Avery back or will they waive him?
Matthew Barnaby (3:47 PM)
They definitely will not take him back. They have been a much better team and are getting along much better. Look for him to be bought out in the summer.
Who you have for MVP?
Matthew Barnaby (3:48 PM)
Alexander Ovechkin. Since starting off with two goals in his first eleven games, he is now leading with 34. Night in, night out, he has been dominant.
Jeff (Boston, MA)
Hey Matthew, despite not getting as much recognition as guys like Green, Bouwmeester, or even Chara, Dennis Wideman has really proven himself this year I feel. Do you think he has a chance at the Norris Trophy?
Matthew Barnaby (3:50 PM)
He has played great and provides a lot of offense for the Bruins. I don't see him having a chance at the Norris Trophy. Dan Boyle and Chara have been incredible, and one of those two will win.
Despite what Bettman said, do you think the Coyotes days in Phoenix are numbered?
Matthew Barnaby (3:51 PM)
Obviously Gary is going to say all the right things, but the reality of it is, if the economy stays the way it is, Phoenix is a tough sell. The housing market and lack of sales of suites puts a drain on revenues. Phoenix is finally doing a great job on the ice, and it would be nice for them to stay.
Is San Jose up to the challenge of maybe facing off against Boston in the finals?
Matthew Barnaby (3:52 PM)
This would be an unbelievable final. Two very exciting teams, two great goaltenders, and two really good coaches. It would honestly be, I think, the best final we could hope for.
One guy you wouldnt't want to fight currently in the NHL?
Matthew Barnaby (3:53 PM)
Derek Boogaard. Too big, too mean, and way too tough.
Jeff Thompson (Manhattan)
Turco seems to be finally hitting his stride and the Stars have really looked much better recently. Do you see them going on a run that gets them as the playoffs approach?
Matthew Barnaby (3:54 PM)
I talked to Marty yesterday, and he is just excited that he is playing the way that he knows he can. Dallas, with all their distractions and injuries, are still well-coached and have enough players that make a difference. They will be a playoff team, but I don't see them going too far.
Can the Rangers be a contender in the East?
Matthew Barnaby (3:55 PM)
I don't see it. They have a great goaltender, but they struggle to score goals. Adding Redden and giving Rosival big contracts has made this team impossible to make trades. I see them making the playoffs and going one-and-out.
Was the Lightning's biggest mistake letting Dan Boyle go?
Matthew Barnaby (3:58 PM)
Barry Melrose had no chance with the defense he was working with. Dan Boyle was replaced by Gary Roberts and Radim Vrbata up front. You tell me if they would have been better with Dan Boyle, the future Norris Trophy winner.
what happened to crosby this year? do u feel malkin is best player on the pens this season?
Matthew Barnaby (3:59 PM)
I would still take Crosby first. Watching Malkin last night carry the team on his back was pretty scary. I just think Crosby makes players around him better. Malkin has had a great year, obviously leading the league with 79 points.
Matthew Barnaby (4:00 PM)
Good luck to all of you guys this week, with your teams playing some very important games. Trade rumors will pick up, and we'll try to address them as we get closer. See ya!
