Matthew will be here in a few minutes to take your NHL questions!
Matthew Barnaby (2:59 PM)
I don't know if anyone saw the Ovechkin goal last night. If you didn't, watch the 6 p.m. SportsCenter. Let's get to it.
Hey Matthew do you think the Bruins will go out and get a guy like Chris Pronger Eric Cole or Keith Thachuk
Matthew Barnaby (3:00 PM)
I definitely think they will make a move. I think they would like to add Eric Cole, a guy that is unrestricted at the end of the year. The only problem is Edmonton is still in the hunt. Don't look for a major trade to break up the nucleus.
Mike (Pittsburgh, PA)
Who do you see the Pens going after before the deadline? And do you see Kovalchuk staying in ATL?
Matthew Barnaby (3:01 PM)
I do see Kovalchuk staying in Atlanta. Ticket sales are not great and he is the big sell. As for the Pens, they have been in talks with Tampa, regarding Martin St. Louis. I think they will get something done, but I don't see it being the St. Louis for Ryan Whitney deal. They need to make a move quick or they will be out of this playoff hunt.
J.B. (Dunmore, PA)
Mr. Barnaby: Do you think the Penguins made the right choice in firing Coach Thierren?
Matthew Barnaby (3:03 PM)
I do and I don't. He wasn't the most liked coach and seemed to have lost some of the players. When you're in a playoff battle and you lose 6-2 to Toronto, you need to change it up. Having said that, he had no Gonchar and Ray Shero has not made any deals.
Rich Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Hi Matthew-What do you think about my FL Panthers now and our playoff chances? Doesn't coach Peter DeBoer deserve consideration for coach of the year (if we do make the playoffs)? Will Jay Bouwmeester still be a Panther after the trade deadline?
Matthew Barnaby (3:04 PM)
DeBoer definitely deserves consideration for Coach of the Year. No one expected them to be in the position they're in. And with all the talks surrounding Bouwmeester, they have just played exciting hockey. I think Bouwmeester will be traded and that having watched the Panthers play a lot, I still think they'll make the playoffs. You can't let this guy walk for free.
Is Brodeur no longer the Devils' everyday goalie?
Matthew Barnaby (3:05 PM)
Brodeur, when he returns, will be the Devils' everyday goaltender. He loves getting a lot of starts and has proved he can handle it. The only good thing about the situation is that they don't have to rush him back.
I feel Pavel Datsyuk is a truly unique talent in the NHL and has the ability to do things with the puck that nobody else in the league can do. Do you think he is underrated? And should he receive some MVP talk this year?
Matthew Barnaby (3:06 PM)
He should always be in MVP talks. If you watch him night in and night out, he's truly amazing. Great hands, sweet moves, and finishes all of his checks and not a lot of people notice. Unfortunately, for him this is the year of Ovechkin.
Sabres-Flyers tonight. It is an important conference game for both teams. Who do you like in the contest?
Matthew Barnaby (3:08 PM)
I think this is a statement game. Philly has a high potent offense but needs to solidify their goaltending. Buffalo is hot and cold. Play great one night and don't show up the other. Secondary guys have to pick up scoring with Vanek out. I say Philly, 4-2.
CJ (Pleasant Hill, Iowa)
Matt, if you had to choose from any goalie in the league to lead your team through the playoffs, who's your guy?
Matthew Barnaby (3:08 PM)
I go with proven winners. I pick Detroit to win the Cup, because they have proven time and time that they can. As for goalie, it would be Marty Brodeur.
William (Salinas, CA)
As a guy who wasn't afraid to drop the gloves as a player, what is your take on the current discussions about whether fighting still belongs in the NHL?
Matthew Barnaby (3:10 PM)
Fighting still belongs and will always belong in the NHL. I don't ever see a guy get out of a seat to go get a hot dog or a beer when a fight starts. I think the rules of engagement should be left alone. The only thing I would look at would be chinstraps and take downs. That's where I see guys getting hurt.
Top 3 to win the Cup?
Matthew Barnaby (3:11 PM)
Boston, Detroit, San Jose.
Pat (Washington Capitals, DC)
Is gonchar really the answer for Pitt? Is he really go to get them in the playoffs? come on, he's now Ovechkin and thats why we traded him away.
Matthew Barnaby (3:12 PM)
Gonchar is defintely going to help them. But it's tough to miss three quarters of the season and come back and help right away. Their power play desperately needs something and he has proven that he can move the puck and put up good numbers. I still don't think it will be enough to get them into the playoffs.
Is Ovechkin the best you've ever seen?
Matthew Barnaby (3:13 PM)
He's definitley up there. I played against Gretzky and Lemieux. So they are all different types of players. I was talking about it last night and said I have never seen this type of player before. He scores, he plays with so much passion and on any given night, he could lay out 15 checks. No super star I have ever seen has played like that.
AVFAN (Fort Collins Colorado)
When is Joe Sakic coming back and when he does, will he help them much?
Matthew Barnaby (3:14 PM)
Not sure of the exact time table for Joe, but it should be a few weeks. I think Colorado has now become a seller and would love to move Ryan Smyth. This could be the end for Joe.
Adam (Philly, Pa)
Just want to state how much i hated you as a player. But i respected you enough to wear your number in my hockey league. growing up, i would love attending flyers-sabres game and watching you smile that ugly kisser to every fan in philly. Just wanted to thank you for all the memories and wish you good luck with your post career occupation. One question, Do you think the flyers are cup worthy with a top goalie? If so, who do you think they go after?
Matthew Barnaby (3:16 PM)
And I hated you as a fan. Just joking. I love playing in Philadelphia. The fans are so passionate it made it a lot of fun for a lot of years. I have heard they are in talks with Atlanta to try and pick up one of their goalies. I'm not sold on the two they have and neither are they.
Matthew Barnaby (3:16 PM)
If they do get a reliable goalie, they are as good as anyone in the East.
Tom (River North)
Matthew, a lot of people bashed Hossa last year for taking less money and going to Detroit. So far, he's looking like a genius, right?
Matthew Barnaby (3:17 PM)
I think it speaks volumes on his character to have left upwards of $40 million on the table to give himself what he felt was the best chance to win the Cup. He's having a great year and enjoying every minute of it. I would have taken the cash.
What is your opinion on Sean Avery and the way he plays the game?
Matthew Barnaby (3:18 PM)
I love the way Sean plays the game. He's a good skater, good passer and not a bad finisher. He adds a dynamic that not a lot of players have, but when I look for a teammate, I look for character and someone I want to go to war for. I've talked to too many people that have not many good things to say about him.
Who do you see as the last two teams in and the last two teams out for each conference? Thanks
Matthew Barnaby (3:20 PM)
If someones going to knock out anyone in the West they will have to go through Detroit and San Jose. So I see those two at the end and Boston has clearly been the class of the East. Throw in Washington with a little goaltending and there's your four.
Matthew Barnaby (3:20 PM)
Good luck to everyone as trade deadline nears. Hopefully Santa's good to you and you get everytyhing you wish for.
