Matthew Barnaby (3:00 PM)
Playoff weather is here. A few games left and we will know exactly who is in. I look forward to answering your questions.

Is Dave Tippett, the co GMs, or injuries to blame more for the Stars' season?
Matthew Barnaby (3:02 PM)
I like Dave Tippett as coach and the whole organization; they got off to a horrible start and then have had a ton of injuries. I do not know what is going to happen as usually changes are made once you do not make the playoffs but hopefully Dave Tippett will remain as head coach.
Jeff (Pittsburgh PA)
Matthew, is New Jersey going to be able to rebound in time for the playoffs?
Matthew Barnaby (3:03 PM)
Marty Brodeur struggled last night and the whole team defensively did not help him out. I would rather be struggling now then in two weeks. This is still a good team and I think they will be ready to go on the 16th.

any chance then pens resign bill guerin. he's helped our team big time. btw, loved u as a pen. want a come back?
Matthew Barnaby (3:04 PM)
Billy Guerin has fit in quite nicely. I love the leadership he showed fighting tough guy Clarkson last night. I think it would be a good fit for both the player and the organization to re-sign him.

you said after the penguins traded Ryan Whitney that they needed to trade for another defense man and it looks like you were wrong do you still think that way with the penguins playing so well and by the way they still have Boucher who which makes them seven good defense man deep
Matthew Barnaby (3:05 PM)
The additions that they have gotten have really turned this team around. Their D is playing physical and moving the puck quickly to a talented bunch of forwards. I know they would have liked to have added a D, but this group is playing very well and I would not want to play against this team right now.

Matthew, You will always be one of my favorite Penguins! I was wondering what you thought of all the young Americans (Bogosian, Wheeler, van Riemsdyk, Bobby Ryan, Oshie, etc.) And their chances of playing in Vancouver in 2010? There's been plenty of top talent come into the NHL from the lower 48, will they be ready? Will they give us a better shot than the veteran hands?
Matthew Barnaby (3:07 PM)
There is a lot of great young talent in the NHL. And a lot of those kids are Americans. You look at the way Oshie is playing and Bogosian is learning every day. They will not be very strong at the Olympics but a lot of these kids will have a legitimate chance of making the team as they will be very young. A little growing pains, but the future is bright.
Jeff (Pittsburgh, PA)
Does Kari Lehtonen have a future in Atlanta?
Matthew Barnaby (3:08 PM)
I think he does have a future, it is all going to come down to dollars and cents. There are some teams out there that need a goalie and will be willing to spend money on him.
Hi Matt, gotta admit I like you better sitting here than playing against rhe Flyers (lets get the gold teeth back). Better playoff matchup, Philly v Pitt or Pitt v Washington?
Matthew Barnaby (3:10 PM)
I think either of those would be unbelievable matchups. Pitt and Philly's stats are almost identical. The Flyers and Pittsburgh can score with anyone in the league. This would be a shootout. Pitt vs. Washington is a dream matchup for the NHL, as Crosby would face Ovechkin.

Do you see Montreal falling out of the playoffs and Florida sneaking in? If so, what would the fallout be for the Habs?
Matthew Barnaby (3:11 PM)
The Florida Panthers have had a great run through all the injuries and the Bouwmeester saga. But I think they are going to fall a little short as Montreal has the easiest schedule left. The loss to Buffalo, when they had a 3-1 lead in the 3rd period, last week, put the nail in the coffin.

if the sharks get their key players back in time 4 a series with Detroit and both teams r at or near full strength who do u think will win a 7 game series? including that San jose can keep the home ice advantage that they hold right now
Matthew Barnaby (3:12 PM)
This would be a heavyweight battle that everyone would love to see. I picked Detroit to win at the start of the year and I am sticking to that. The way Osgood has played, the Sharks could get to him early and upset the reigning champs.
Matt (Chicago, Illinois)
Matthew, with the playoffs approaching, who do you think the Blackhawks should make their goalie for the rest of the season and the playoffs, Cristobal Huet or Nikolai Khabibulan?
Matthew Barnaby (3:13 PM)
I would start Khabibulin for the fact that he has won a Stanley Cup and both of them have been very good all year.
Jeff (Pittsburgh, PA)
But with Ondrej Pavelec waiting in Atlanta do you really think that Atlanta will spend their money on Lehtonen?
Matthew Barnaby (3:14 PM)
There is a reason they did not trade him at the deadline. He is still in their future, but again money will be the determining factor.
Blake (Coto de Caza, CA)
Barney - Dave Karpa is awful now. Do you still play? And, if so, are you also 260lbs and pivot like a tug-boat?
Matthew Barnaby (3:15 PM)
I am closer to 160 than 260. But do not talk about my ex-roomie like that. He was never that quick of foot, but a great teammate.
Around some message boards I've been hearing criticizism of Ovie's +/- and how that will affect his MVP votes but his power play stats are out of this world and because he gets so many points on the power play shouldn't that offset his +/- because you don't get credited for a + on the power play?
Matthew Barnaby (3:16 PM)
Ovie is going to get my vote as I hate the +/- stat. He is dominating every night, he has 12 more goals than anyone else, and he is the most exciting player in the game. Good enough for me.
Sean (TR NJ)
The Canes are being pushed as threat in the East is the same being said about Vancouver in West? If so how far do you see either one going in the playoffs?
Matthew Barnaby (3:20 PM)
Both teams are playing great right now. I think Vancouver has the most points since February with 41. Having said that, I think anyone can come out of the East. Carolina is playing with such a physical presence and great goaltending, Vancouver has Sundin playing well and are tough to check because of the Sedin twins and the emergence of Kesler and Burrows. I still only consider this a two-horse in the West between SJ and Detroit.
Matt (Chicago, Illinois)
Do you think the Blackhawks are for real this year or do you think they will be a bust like they have been the past few times they made it?
Matthew Barnaby (3:21 PM)
Chicago is an exciting team to watch. I still think they need some more experience, but it is going to be a great 10 years to be a hawks fan. The four biggest leaders on the team have never played a playoff game. Not this year; but enjoy the ride.
Evan (Los Angeles)
Your Ken Holland. Do you sign both Hossa and Franzen? Or do you go for one and try to keep some cheaper mid-level players for balance i.e Samuelsson, Hudler...
Matthew Barnaby (3:22 PM)
It is going to be tough to sign both those big guns. Having said that he seems to always find a way. Players take less to stay in Detroit, which almost makes it unfair. Do not be like some of the other teams around, and be too top heavy in salaries with a few guys.
Matthew do you think the Ducks can catch Columbus for the 6 spot? & if not, how much of a problem do they pose for San Jose/Detroit?
Matthew Barnaby (3:23 PM)
I do not think they will catch Columbus, but I can guarantee that this will not be a first round matchup that either of those top teams would want to face.
Who do you think will come away with the 4th spot in the East?
Matthew Barnaby (3:24 PM)
I am going to say Pittsburgh just because of the roll they are on and the confidence with which they are playing. They have one more win than Philadelphia and that would be the first tie breaker.
Do you think the Flyers are a legitimate contender in the East this year?
Matthew Barnaby (3:25 PM)
Definitely a legitimate contender as I think the East is wide open. If there is a team that can makeup for average goaltending Philly is that team.
Matthew Barnaby (3:26 PM)
Thanks everyone! Great questions. A lot of those answers will be answered in the next few days too. Enjoy an exciting week of hockey. We'll talk to you again next Thursday. See ya!
