Beano Cook (3:01 PM)
Good afternoon and welcome to our first off-season college football chat. We now have to suffer through the baseball season. I hope to get some tickets for some Nationals games. I know the demand is high, and the congress wants to go for free but I am willing to pay. It is a small version of earmarks.
We're Cookin' With Beano!! I used to love that segment. But Seriously, what's your take on the Bowden losing 14 wins and the lack of drama this will cause for the whole Bowden/Paterno record?
Beano Cook (3:03 PM)
Number one, it is not official yet, though if I had to bet, it will happen. I am not saying it is right or wrong. However, Paterno, as I said a number of years ago, will have more wins. Two reasons--easier non-conference games and easier conference. However, I have never felt that the games from Samford should have counted.

Hey beano, what will my longhorns have to improve on this season to win the national championship. And if Colt Mcoy plays as great as he did last year, will he win the heisman?
Beano Cook (3:05 PM)
First, Texas has to be concerned with Oklahoma, a team it beat last year. If McCoy, Tebow and Bradford all have great years, we will have another three-way race. That is the last question I will take on the Heisman. It is a little early for that. I guess Texas has to replace Orakpo and that is a concern.
Beans!!! Great to talk CF in April! What do you expect out of the Pac-10 this year? Coming off of 5-0 in the bowls against admitedly mediocre teams, do you see a stronger top half with Oregon, Cal, and ASU possibly lending more "cred" to the league outside of The Song Girls?
Beano Cook (3:08 PM)
First, it was 5-0 in bowl games no matter who the opponents were. Not sure what to expect out of the conference. I will say USC won't go undefeated having to visit Ohio State and Notre Dame, and they will lose one of those games. The tougher league games are on the on the road. If USC isn't the favorite in the Pac-10, who is? Pete Carroll has so much depth that he will find replacements for the talented stars lost. UCLA should be better and Washington obviously has to be better. You never know what will happen at Oregon with Chip Kelly taking over as head coach from Mike Bellotti.
Jose (Gurnee, Il) [via mobile]
What do you think of Notre Dame's coaching changes? Will we see them impact of those changes on the field? Thanks
Beano Cook (3:09 PM)
Notre Dame will win at least nine games, and I feel you will notice some changes. It is no secret that Charlie Weis is fighting to keep his job and the schedule is not that tough. It is not a frank Leahy or SEC-type schedule.
What are your thoughts on Ole Miss? What do you expect out of them this coming football season?
Beano Cook (3:11 PM)
Houston Nutt did a great job last year. His hiring should lead to the AD (Pete Boone) getting a raise. One of the best games of the year will be Florida at Mississippi. I will make a prediction right now, that no SEC team will finish the season with a perfect record...I love that conference.
dylan briggs choctaw,oklahoma [via mobile]
With all the starters coming back on defense for oklahoma do you think there defense will be one of the best in the nation next season?
Beano Cook (3:12 PM)
I think Oklahoma will be one of the best teams in the country. They have the QB and a solid defense so they will be tough to beat. Need to replace some receivers, Robinson and some OL, but Bob Stoops will have a contender. I have no idea who will win Texas-Oklahoma this season.
True or False: Michigan wins more than 6 games.
Beano Cook (3:13 PM)
I will say yes, but I am hesitating. It is going to take a little time to rebuild but I will say more than six.
Steve Carson City NV [via mobile]
Will USC defense be any good in the Pac Ten.
Beano Cook (3:14 PM)
Lost a lot of talent, especially at linebacker with Cushing and Malauaga. I don't think the kids playing in spring practice are walk-ons. They don't replace players, they simply reload. The big question is, will the Song Girls replace the ones that graduated.
Dylan Briggs Choctaw,Oklahom [via mobile]
With all the injury's to the gators this spring do think they will be able to stay healthy this season?
Beano Cook (3:15 PM)
A little early to worry. Moody, the running back, should be OK. This is the time to have the injuries, in the spring. The schedule is demanding, with road games at LSU and Mississippi.
Michael (Paris, Kentucky)
Beano, your remarks in your video the other day about Kentucky having no chance to win the 1958 national championship, unless it was in Louisville, are ridiculous. They beat Miami-OH by 24, Notre Dame by 33, Temple by 1 (a team they had already beaten earlier in the year), and a one man seattle team of Elgin Baylor by 12 in the final game. Kentucky was made up of 4 experienced seniors and 1 junior, two of which played in the NBA and Adrian Smith who was an NBA all star and gold medalist in the 1960 olympics. As for the fans, we have a right to want our team to win, and just because we hold our team with such high regard doesnt mean we should turn our televisions off because we think they should be competing for a championship every year.
Beano Cook (3:16 PM)
That is your opinion. The people who followed college basketball agreed that Kentucky got all of the late calls. If you don't think that playing there wasn't worth something when the Wildcats won by one point on a Hatton field goal in the last few seconds. By the way the line was Kentucky favored by one. I was there.
Beano! If you hurry, I think Stub Hub might have some nosebleeds left for Buccos @ Nats in Mid-May! Do the Cougars keep it close against OU in Jerry-World's debut?
Beano Cook (3:18 PM)
Pittsburgh-Washington...wow. I will ask for help for good seats. Bo is not the only dog in Washington. The Nationals are not the only incompetent team in DC...BYU-Oklahoma should be a fun game to open that new stadium.
You mention Florida at Mississippi as important. That game isn't on the game schedule Beano !
Beano Cook (3:19 PM)
Then I made a mistake, I apologize. That is a bad mistake. I do know they go to LSU. If I was an air controller that would not be a good stat, one for two.
Mitch (Gainesville, FL) [via mobile]
How long do "football dynasties" generally last?
Beano Cook (3:20 PM)
Well, it is tougher today than it used to be. I think it is safe to say schools like USC, Florida, LSU, OKlahoma, Texas, they will always have a slip-up once in a while, but 99 percent of the time they will be very good.
Eric, Clanton, Alabama [via mobile]
With the departure of 3 year starter John Parker Wilson, do you think Alabama will have a dropoff in QB play this year, or will Greg McElroy step in and make Bama fans forget about Wilson?
Beano Cook (3:22 PM)
Realize this, he did not pass for 220 yards in any game last season. This is still a running team first, even without Coffee. This will not be a great year for the Tide, but there are several reasons and not just because of Wilson. Early prediction for an improved team--Arkansas.
rockaway new jersey [via mobile]
How do you think rutgers football will do in the big east this season. will they when the big east or go to a bowl game and how many wins thisyear
Beano Cook (3:23 PM)
I don't know. They will have a tough time with North Carolina. It is still the Big East, which is the weakest of the BCA conferences. I give Greg Schiano credit for staying with the program when he has offers.
Rich (Alameda, CA)
Give us a prediction. Tennessee vs. Florida in the swamp on Lane Kiffin's first trip to Gainesville.
Beano Cook (3:24 PM)
Too early but you know there will be good stuff on the bulletin board. Kiffin may want to bring a couple of extra state troopers. He may want to do that for his first trip to Tuscaloosa too.
bob Lubbock Texas
How many wins do you see texas tech ending up with this year? And what bowls are you seeing?
Beano Cook (3:26 PM)
Losing Harrell and Crabtree means fewer wins this season...this just in. Texas Tech always finds quarterbacks, from Klingsbury to Harrell.
Andrew, Fort Worth
Do you think arkansas fans will ever face the facts and admit that running off Houston Nutt was idiotic?
Beano Cook (3:27 PM)
We have to see what Bobby Petrino does in the long haul. Time will tell. I will say I felt it was a msitake by Arkansas.
Oscar(amarillo, TX [via mobile]
Who do you think will play for the national title? And why?
Beano Cook (3:29 PM)
My early prediction, subject to change in August, Florida vs. Texas. The final prediction will be on the last Wednesday in August. I am not sure about this because of Florida's schedule and you could see an unbeaten in another league in contention.
linda (pittsburgh, pa)
thanks for adding me on facebook as your friend. any idea who is gonna replace JoePa when he is ready to retire?
Beano Cook (3:31 PM)
I don't know anything about computers and I am grateful for that. All of my friends say I should have an answering service. I tell them if I don't answer I am either not there or dead. If it is important the person will call back. I don't really know about Facebook so I am not sure who accepted you.
Darrell (Orlando, FL)
With the economic situation and everyone evaluating and re-evaluating their expenses and travel and things of that nature, will the conferences need to realign to take on schools with bigger football fan bases? Not this year but in upcoming seasons assuming the economy doesn't quickly change.
Beano Cook (3:33 PM)
Number one, it is a good question...maybe they will have to. The SEC is 11 state universities and one private. They will always have fans that travel if their team is good. I just don't know and it is an interesting oibservation., The bigger question right now if money coming from boosterrs. Any college that raises its ticket prices for 2009 shows no class.
How many games will the tide win in 09?
Beano Cook (3:36 PM)
I think it is safe to say not 12-0, not a tough prediction. Alabama will always be good with Nick Saban there. The spring game is this Saturday and I heard a rumor Chris Fowler may be there. Alabama will win at least eight games. The SEC is as good as it gets and the non-league schedule is not a backbreaker. Next year (2010) starts a Penn State-Alabama series.
Terence. Salisbury. Nc [via mobile]
How good will the florida state offense be this year. And who will be the explosive talent they need.
Beano Cook (3:37 PM)
Florida State should be better. Schools like FSU and UCLA get athletes. Speaking of the Bruins,. I think we will have an intense rivalry between the Trojans and Bruins and the coaching staffs.
Candice (Alpharetta, Ga)
Beano tell me what you think of the Bulldogs this year? Considering they are flying a little under the radar this year after not meeting expectations last year.
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
The keys will be Joe Cox at quarterback replacing Matthew Stafford, and Caleb King at running back from Knowshon Moreno. Georgia always seems to have running backs. Injuries on defense in the sprng shouldn't mean too much. Georgia Tech by the way hired the right coach in Paul Johnson. One other thought, the biggest story in college football this week was the Alabama-Auburn game going to Fridays on CBS. If you live in Seattle and you see Alabama-Auburn, you willlikely watch. It helps CBS on that Saturday because Georgia-Georgia Tech, SC-Clemson could end up on there. Fans in Alabama are complaining but in today's world that is the way it is done.
Beano Cook (3:40 PM)
Thankss for your questions. I will see you sometime again in May.
