Mel Kiper (12:02 PM)
We've got our final chat before the draft. A lot to pass along. A lot of rumors out there. We'll have a review chat next week.
Tony (Miami, FL)
Mel I'm a huge fan. Last year Oklahoma's Duke Robinson would've been considered a sure fire first rounder, not so this year. Why the fall?
Mel Kiper (12:03 PM)
I don't know about a sure fire, guards always drop. They're not as prioritized as tackles. The national championship game was the start of a slide for him. Looking at the guard situation, he could go third or fourth round. He should be a good player in the NFL.
Will any of the top 3 centers (unger, mack, wood) be there when the Bengals pick #6 in Round 2?
Mel Kiper (12:04 PM)
I think so. Pittsburgh is going to take a center. That will leave Cleveland and Cincinnatti with center. They might have a choice of two of their top three centers.
Mickey Loomis (New Orleans)
I am getting upset hear that my rumors about Raji aren't panning out so he will drop to us at 14. Can he still drop to us at 14 Mel?
Mel Kiper (12:07 PM)
14? No. I think he could go 5 to Cleveland. He could go 8 to Jacksonville or 9 to Green Bay. I don't think he slips past 9. It would not surprise me at all. The specualtion in Cleveland is offense or defense? Crabtree or Raji. The last thing I heard was that they could go defense. If they do, it's Raji. My next first round projection will go up Friday afternoon. Right now I have Stafford, J. Smith, Curry, Sanchez, Raji, Monroe, A. Smith, Crabtree, Orakpo, Maclin. That's the top 10. That will be subject to change. This is only Wednesday and I'll have that going up on Friday.
Dave (Baltimore, MD)
Do you think the Percy "it's all about Me" Harvin failed drug test will cause him to drop like a stone this weekend? Day 2?
Mel Kiper (12:08 PM)
I had him at 30 earlier. There were durability concerns. I had him at 17 two weeks ago. Then he was at 30. It was a definite impact. He's a quality football player. He has great talent. He has to stay healthy. He has to define his role in a pro offense.
Mike, New Jersey
Any chances of the 49ers trading out of the 10 spot? If so, who? If not, who are they looking at taking?
Mel Kiper (12:09 PM)
It's always a possibility there. They're one of the teams we've talked about. But who's the team trading up? The Jets, Tampa Bay, Denver, Philly. Those are the teams looking to trade up. Moving down is attractive for the 49ers. They would be the perfect team to trade down. They could move down and feel pretty good about it.
What does Denver do with the extra draft picks they got from the Cutler trade??
Mel Kiper (12:12 PM)
First of all, I think their draft is going to be very heavy defense. Maybe a running back in the first round. The best back in that group could be someone they target. If they want to look at an OLB, it could be Everette Brown. I think they could get a NT type in Brace in round 2. The defensive needs are DL as well as OLB and ILB. They could also use another corner. The front seven on defense and a RB is what they have to prioritize. There's also talk about Mark Sanchez sliding, but I really think he's going to Seattle. I've had him as the fifth best player on my board.
top recievers from last year fell to the second round. Do you see that happening to running backs this year
Mel Kiper (12:14 PM)
No. The three RBs are going to go. The team that would hope to a slide is Arizona. They need a RB. Tim Hightower scored TDs, but he only averaged 2.8 yards per carry. I don't think there's any chance right now that those three RBs don't go in the first round. I would be extremely surprised if one of those dropped into the second round. They're all talented kids.
Mel Kiper (12:14 PM)
Wells, while he was hurt this year, still averaged over 5 yards per carry.
If you're the GM of the Browns, and Edwards gets traded, how much pressure do you have to draft Crabtree with that pick and can you resist it?
Mel Kiper (12:16 PM)
It's hard. Crabtree is a talented kid. Super talented. Route running is going to be something he has to work on. The routes you run at Texas Tech are not the routes you run in the NFL. What I'm hearing is they're looking defense. That's BJ Raji. Now, with Williams, Rogers and Raji, you've got options. I don't think there's a lot of pressure. There are reasons to argue against Crabtree. I have no problems with them taking Raji.
If the Giants don't trade for a WR, do you think they would swap with the Vikes at #22 so they can get their receiver, and who would be available for the Vikes at #29 then?
Mel Kiper (12:17 PM)
The Vikings are also looking at WR. I have them taking Kenny Britt. If you're moving up into that area, that's who you're looking at. Heyward-Bey, Britt. If you're later, you're looking at Nicks, who's dropping a little bit.
Jeff (Atlanta, GA)
With the Buffalo Bills picking twice in 1st round now, do you think they'll go OL (Andre Smith?) with their first pick and address a pass rusher with their second pick?
Mel Kiper (12:20 PM)
I don't think Andre Smith will be there. I think he could go to Oakland, Green Bay and wouldn't be there for Buffalo. If he is, they could take him. Do they reach a little bit for Oher or go with Robert Ayres, Aaron Maybin and go with Eben Britton, William Beatty, Phil Loadholt with the second pick? Loadholt's stock has improved in the last month to month and a half. I think he gets into the second round.
What player that view as a top 10 pick at the moment, could fall the furtherest come draft day?
Mel Kiper (12:25 PM)
That's a tough question. The biggest question is Aaron Maybin. There will be other players in the mix. He'll be an interesting guy to watch. Josh Freeman will be interesting to see, does he go in the middle of the first or does a team trade back into the first round to get him? Another interesting thing is what center does Pittsburgh take? In the top 10, Crabtree might be the one to watch. If he gets past Cleveland, Oakland might be the one. They like speed guys. They might take Maclin or Andre Smith. If they pass on Crabtree, what does Jacksonville do? All the speculation is they want to trade out of 8. But if Crabtree is there, what do they do? They just signed Holt and Trey Wingo made a great point on NFL Live yesterday, who better to teach Crabtree how to run routes than Holt? So, to answer the question, if I had to pick one player, it might be Crabtree. Sanchez was an interesting player at one point too, but we've got him locked in at 4. But if he gets past Seattle at 4, teams could move around to try and get him.
Chris (yorktown NY)
Mel, is there any scenario that has you seeing the Jets take Josh Freeman? I personally feel he has the same tools as Kellen Clemens so i do not see a point in touching Freeman. what do you think?
Mel Kiper (12:27 PM)
I don't know about that. Clemens and Ratliff, they're young QBs with a lot to prove. Josh Freeman is a kid who a lot of people in the league really like him and others don't like. I think Josh Freeman goes in the first round. With his size and arm and athletic ability. The argument for him would be that he didn't have a great supporting cast around him. Somebody's going to take him in the first round. For the Jets, he's got more talent than anyone they have on the roster. The same situation is in Tampa too.
Greg (Lemont, IL)
What do you see the Bears doing with their first pick in the second round- wide receiver, safety, O- or D-line, or simply the best player available at the time?
Mel Kiper (12:29 PM)
I think WR and OT are two areas that they could look at. Pass rushing DE couldn't hurt. Massaquoi, Robiskie are solid second round WRs. Another guy to keep an eye on is Ramses Barden.
K.C. (Olustee, Florida)
I havent heard any news on Florida tight end Ingrum. Where has he been projected and what team do you think will take him?
Mel Kiper (12:30 PM)
He had the injury and didn't play this year. But with his pass catching skills and can be that H-back, he's almost a glorified WR. He can run and has real good hands. I think you look at him as a 2 or 3 round pick.
What do you think the odds are the Browns will make a trade, either Quinn or Edwards? And if so what affects does this have on their draft picks??
Mel Kiper (12:31 PM)
Edwards makes sense. It's a new regime. He had a lot of dropped balls last year. The Giants want a big WR. They weren't the same after Burress was out. I don't see them trading Brady Quinn. Are you going to put all of your stock in Derek Anderson? And I don't know who would want Brady Quinn.
Matt: (Fort Collins, CO):
Last year you thought CSU's Caleb Hanie was a sleeper. Do you see any CSU players, Gartrell Johnson or Kory Sperry, getting drafted and having an impact in the NFL.
Mel Kiper (12:35 PM)
I think Hanie is a guy that has a chance. I think he still has that opportunity. Sleepers for this year are Bernard Scott, Quinten Lawrence, John Matthews, Ed Gant, Dominique Edison, Dudley Guice, Cecil Newton, Chris Baker, Sammie Lee Hill, Lee Robinson, Gregory Toller, Don Carey, Rashad Jennings, Johnny Knox, Lawrence Sidbury, Ramses Barden.
Mel Kiper (12:35 PM)
If you're looking at QB late, in the Caleb Hanie mold, Drew Willy out of Buffalo.
Chad (Las Vegas)
What are the odds that Bouldin is a draft day trade? Who are the possibilities?
Mel Kiper (12:37 PM)
I'm hoping Baltimore. As a Ravens fan, that's what I'm hoping. But Baltimore, Giants, Philadelphia. Baltimore was in the TO sweepstakes at one point, he went to Philly. Think about the NFC East and how critical that would be, if one of those teams got him. Those are the three teams you keep hearing about.
Tim (San Diego)
What is the likliehood that SD trades down from #16 and picks up a second round pick?
Mel Kiper (12:39 PM)
San Diego doesn't really have a pressing, they have to have a guy need area. Moore out of Missouri might be a good choice for them. He's going to be a second round pick, but should have been a first round pick but had a bad senior year. That's where San Diego could afford to trade down.
Mel Kiper (12:39 PM)
Another need is OL. They could use a OT/OG. A luxury pick could be another RB.
Rich, (Washington, DC)
Mel, since Michael Jenkins will be the first corner off the board, do you think that Vontae Davis the younger brother of Vernon Davis will be a better pro coming out of college early? If so, what team would his talents fit best in?
Mel Kiper (12:42 PM)
I like Jenkins better than Davis. I have always thought that if Jenkins were a little faster, he would be a top 10 pick. If he ran a 4.45 instead of a 4.55, he would be top 10. He could end up being a safety. He's a Cover 2 zone type CB. He's not a man CB. He doesn't have the speed for it. He's got great ball skills. He's a proven entity. Davis wasn't as consistent. Jenkins was the more consistent player. Davis is faster, stronger, better athlete. Chisled. His body is granite. He's one of the stronger CBs I've seen. As a cover guy, he doesn't always bring his "A" game. He's a risk-reward guy. He could be one of the top CBs in the league or a disappointment.
Dave (Granite Bay, CA)
Do the Niners have any shot at Louis Delmas in the 2nd Round? He is my sleeper pick, how do you see him?
Mel Kiper (12:44 PM)
I wish he was a little bigger. Durability is a little of a concern with him. He had a great career. I think he's the second best safety behind Moore. I think he's a mid-two. Will he be there for the 49ers? Yes. The ultimate playmaker in the second round is Alphonso Smith. He has returnability, he blocked five kicks. Todd McShay and I were asked for second rounders that could have an immediate pick and we both said Smith. He's a true football player. He's instinctive. He has anticipation. He has inate ability. He intercepted 8 passes and I think he returned 4 for TDs.
